Friedensbündnis ruft zum Protest gegen Afghanistan-Einsatz auf

Ein Friedensbündnis aus rund 250 Initiativen hat für Samstag (20. September) in Berlin und Stuttgart zum Protest gegen eine Verlängerung des Bundeswehrmandats in Afghanistan aufgerufen. Damit soll an die Abgeordneten des Bundestags appelliert werden, bei der im Oktober anstehenden Abstimmung gegen eine Fortsetzung des Einsatzes zu votieren, sagte ein Sprecher des Bündnisses am Montag (15. September) in Berlin. Nach Ansicht des Friedensbündnisses wird Deutschland immer tiefer in den Afghanistan-Konflikt verstrickt. "Afghanistan droht zum deutschen Vietnam zu werden", sagte der Sprecher. Vor wenigen Tagen hatte das Kabinett beschlossen, dieses Kontingent von derzeit 3500 Soldaten ab Herbst um 1000 Mann zu erhöhen. Dem muss das Parlament noch zustimmen.

One of the most experienced Western envoys in Afghanistan said Sunday that conditions there had become the worst since 2001. He urged a concerted American and foreign response, even before a new American administration took office, to avoid "a very hot winter for all of us."

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), as this force is properly known, is responsible for thousands of civilian deaths in Afghanistan. August 22, the US troops in ISAF killed 95 civilians, including 60 children and 19 women, adding to the ever increasing number of civilian deaths.

Have Canadian soldiers been dying in vain in disproportionate numbers in Afghanistan? It’s a reasonable question, given that NATO is panicking over the rise of the Taliban and also over the deteriorating relationship with Pakistan, the West’s main post-9/11 partner in the war on terrorism. Yet the leaders of our national political parties are, for the most part, silent on the subject in the election campaign...
