Immigrant Advocates Take Their Case to Capitol Hill

UN: US Should Close Gitmo Facility

"The state party should cease to detain any person at Guantanamo Bay and close the detention facility," said the UN Committee Against Torture, a panel of 10 independent experts on adherence to the UN Convention Against Torture. The United States should also ensure that no one is detained in secret detention facilities under its control and disclose the existence of any such places, the report said.

Is the GOP ascendancy over?

Human Events
by Pat Buchanan

05/19/06

From 1968 to 1992, a quarter-century, Republicans carried the White House in five of six national elections. By the midpoint and latter stages of this second Republican ascendancy, the party had achieved parity and was nearing hegemony at the congressional level. All this is in peril today, as the Republican Party heads into a perfect storm in November that could sweep it away because it has failed not only to address the crisis of the age, but to comprehend it. What is that crisis? America is today a nation bankrupt in the sense that it cannot meet all the IOUs the country has handed out...

God's Own Party

Classically Liberal
by "CLS"

05/19/06

One of the central principles of American Constitutional government is that the states are independently allowed to pursue domestic policies. This division explicitly restricts federal power and allows a diversity of policies at the state level. One such area has been marriage law. But the Bushified Republican Party has basically abandoned all such principles of Constitutional government. These were the guys who claimed to want to devolve power from the federal level back to the states but under their leader, chosen by God himself, they are concentrating power in Washington...

Is U.S. backing warlords against Somali Islamists?

Officials of Somalia's interim government and some U.S. analysts of Africa policy say the United States has returned to the African country, secretly supporting secular warlords who have been waging fierce battles against Islamic groups for control of the capital, Mogadishu.

American dominatrix

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

05/12/06

That the U.S. secretary of state is parading around the world in dominatrix drag tells us everything we need to know about the country she is representing -- and why the image of the 'ugly American' is making an unwelcome comeback. What better outfit for the chief diplomatic official of a nation that routinely threatens other nations with invasion and worse if they don't kowtow to Washington's edicts? Americans may or may not need a 'World Citizens Guide' to advise them on how to dress, talk, and act when traveling abroad and otherwise dealing with foreigners, but surely one specifically written for U.S. government officials is long overdue...

Republicans for Hillary

Slate
by John Dickerson

05/11/06

Republicans don't vote in Democratic primaries, which is why it's something of a surprise that they've already chosen the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee: Hillary Clinton. Karl Rove has declared that 'anybody who thinks that she's not going to be the candidate is kidding themselves.' Key GOP activists and fund-raisers are signing up with John McCain and telling his advisers they think he's the only one who can beat her in a general election. Conservative John Podhoretz has skipped over the electoral process altogether and is ready to make Clinton president. In the newly released, Can She Be Stopped?, he argues that without an immediate programmatic effort to dismantle her, she will beat the Republican candidate in 2008. Of course, letting your political opponent pick your party's nominee is like letting your mother pick your fiance...

DeLay says he'll leave office on June 9

Houston Chronicle

05/11/06

Rep. Tom DeLay, the once-powerful majority leader whose career was undermined by scandal, said today that he would resign from the House on June 9. 'As you are aware,' the Texas Republican wrote House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., 'I have recently made the decision to pursue new opportunities to engage in the important cultural and political battles of our day from an arena outside of the U.S. House of Representatives.' He told Hastert he would resign at the close of business on June 9...

Logs: Abramoff visited White House twice

Houston Chronicle

05/10/06

Secret Service records made public today show that convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff went to the White House twice in the past five years, omitting three other occasions that have been acknowledged by the Bush administration. The visits occurred on Jan. 20, 2004, the day President Bush delivered his State of the Union address, and on March 6, 2001. Abramoff stayed a total of 63 minutes, 29 seconds, but the records do not indicate where he went in the complex or who he met...
