Leaked Memo Questions War Strategy in Afghanistan

Charles Bremner and Richard Beeston, The Times UK: "The official version of the US-led campaign in Afghanistan received a blow today with a leaked report that the British Ambassador in Kabul believes that US strategy is wrong and the war is as good as lost. The potentially explosive views were published by Le Canard Enchaîné, a respected French weekly, which said that they were direct quotations from a diplomatic cable written by François Fitou, the French Deputy Ambassador in Kabul."

Miami Herald

09/17/08

U.S. and NATO air bombings in Afghanistan have killed more than 500 civilians since 2006, fueling a public backlash against the coalition’s war effort, a prominent human rights group said Monday. Human Rights Watch, an international organization based in New York, blamed some of the civilian deaths on Taliban and al Qaida insurgents who create ”human shields” by blending into populated areas...

September) in Berlin.

Our deafening silence on Afghanistan

Toronto Star [Canada]
by Haroon Siddiqui

09/14/08

Have Canadian soldiers been dying in vain in disproportionate numbers in Afghanistan? It’s a reasonable question, given that NATO is panicking over the rise of the Taliban and also over the deteriorating relationship with Pakistan, the West’s main post-9/11 partner in the war on terrorism. Yet the leaders of our national political parties are, for the most part, silent on the subject in the election campaign...
