The War's Toll on Environment
About 110,000 barrels of oil poured into the Mediterranean two weeks ago after Israeli warplanes hit a coastal power plant. Oil has slicked one-third of Lebanon's coast, and threatens beaches in Syria, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece, yet no cleanup can begin until the fighting is over, says the UN. Meanwhile in northern Israel, huge swaths of forests and fields have been scorched by thousands of Hezbollah rocket strikes.
