How Taxpayers Are Subsidizing BP's Disaster Through the Pentagon
Nick Turse, Tomdispatch.com: "Residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida are livid with BP in the wake of the massive, never-ending oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico - and Barack Obama says they ought to be. But there's one aspect of the BP story that most of those angry residents of the Gulf states aren't aware of. And the president hasn't had a thing to say about it."

A Green New Deal Now
Joe Conason, Truthout: "If the right-wing chorus insists that the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico is 'Obama's Katrina,' then let us hope the president will make the most of that slogan. The comparison between the utter failure of the Bush administration and the missteps and errors of the Obama White House is fundamentally false. Yet there is nevertheless a crucial parallel to be drawn as the fifth anniversary of the hurricane approaches."

Big Oil's Devastation Worldwide
Video
Laura Flanders, GRITtv: "'Oil is a messy business, even when it's legal,' says filmmaker Joe Berlinger, and we've all seen the effects of that business splashed across front pages and television sets over the last month. But the BP disaster isn't the only mess that Big Oil has caused in the last couple of months, to say nothing of the years and decades past."

[T]there’s more than one irresponsible company and its apparently callous CEO behind the disaster in the Gulf. There’s the Mineral Management Service’s repeated rubber stamping of dangerous drilling projects without ensuring proper environmental safeguards were in place. And behind that the agency’s infestation with oil industry cash and cronies, which continued to fester under the leadership of President Obama’s Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. … There are the billions in taxpayer handouts that Big Oil and the fossil fuel industry receive each year. And behind that there are the swarms of industry lobbyists choking the halls of Congress and the stacks of polluter cash filling too many politicians’ campaign accounts. Behind all of this, there’s one deep-rooted problem: increasing corporate infiltration and control of our government...
