Historian warns of sudden collapse of American 'empire'

By Brent Gardner-Smith

"I think this is a problem that is going to go live really soon," Ferguson said. "In that sense, I mean within the next two years. Because the whole thing, fiscally and other ways, is very near the edge of chaos. And we've seen already in Greece what happens when the bond market loses faith in your fiscal policy."

American War Versus Real War

By Nick Turse

If Americans care only sparingly for their paid, professional soldiers -- the ones A.O. Scott says deserve 90 minutes of our time -- they care even less about Afghan civilians. That's why they don't understand war.

Leave them alone

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

07/13/10

I have a modest ten-part proposal for the federal government, although some people undoubtedly will consider it radical. 1. Immediately vacate Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. government has had 8-9 years to do as much killing, injuring, maiming, and destroying as it wants in those two countries. Time’s up. Enough is enough...

It’s Obama’s war, all right

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

07/13/10

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele caught grief recently for suggesting the war was doomed to fail. Steele, who has offended everyone from pro-lifers to Rush Limbaugh fans, truly has the gift of gaffe. But he wasn’t wrong to call Afghanistan a ‘war of Obama’s choosing.’ A recent National Journal graphic shows that under the president’s Afghan ’surge,’ OEF deployments passed Iraq troop levels in ‘a strategic pivot point’ earlier this year. Obama, Steele suggested, had bought into the Democratic ’script’ that has prevailed since the 2004 Kerry campaign: Iraq’s a distraction — ‘the battle should really be in Afghanistan.’ Obama’s escalation of that battle raises young John Kerry’s question about Vietnam: How do you ask someone ‘to be the last man to die for a mistake?’

India's Dongria Kondh Sacred Mountain and Tribal Way of Life Threatened by Unwanted British Vedanta Mining

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!

By Forests.org Forest Protection Portal http://forests.org/ a project of Ecological Internet July 13, 2010

Vedanta Resources, a British mining company, is set to destroy the forests, wildlife and way of life of the Dongria Kondh people. The Dongria Kondh have been struggling with all their might to protect their mountain but are being overpowered by the financial and political might of this multi-billion dollar company. They have been protesting locally for years, and have appealed for international support for their campaign to keep their sacred Niyamgiri Mountain ecologically and culturally intact.

TAKE ACTION HERE NOW: http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=india_mine

The Dongria Kondh are an indigenous tribe who have lived since time immemorial around the mountain Niyamgiri in the Indian state of Orissa. Because they revere this mountain as their god, it has not thus far suffered the deforestation and degradation experienced by similar areas in that part of the world but contains an elephant reserve with Sambar, Leopard, Tiger, Barking Deer, various species of birds and other endangered species of wildlife. However now Vedanta Resources, a British mining company, is set to destroy the forests, wildlife and way of life of the Dongria Kondh people. These local peoples have been vociferously and bravely protesting for years.

Many groups from around the world have been campaigning to persuade Vedanta's shareholders and financiers to distance themselves from the company. A group of international NGO's wrote to Vedanta's bankers in April this year asking them to dissociate themselves from the company. None of the banks have done so, so now it’s time to name and shame them, time for people from all around the world to send emails expressing our disgust that they continue bankroll this disgraceful project. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can send emails to people who could, if they wished, prevent this ecological destruction and injustice from taking place. Please share this action alert with your friends and ask them to do the same.

How Brokers Became Bookies: The Insidious Transformation of Markets Into Casinos

Ellen Brown, Truthout: "Ever since December 2008, the Federal Reserve has held short-term interest rates near zero. This was not only to try to stimulate the housing and credit markets, but also to allow the federal government to increase its debt levels without increasing the interest tab picked up by the taxpayers. The total public US debt increased by nearly 50 percent from 2006 to the end of 2009 (from about $8.5 trillion to $12.3 trillion), but the interest bill on the debt actually dropped (from $406 billion to $383 billion), because of this reduction in interest rates."

“They just don’t know who they’re messing with”

Mother Jones
by Kate Sheppard

07/14/10

If you’ve been reading Mother Jones lately, you’ve heard about BP’s stranglehold on media access in the Gulf, which has included preventing reporters from visting oil-soaked public beaches and barring its spill cleanup workers from talking to the press. Now, one of BP’s ex-media enforcers is speaking out. Former BP contractor Adam Dillon went public last Friday, telling a local news station in New Orleans that he was fed up with BP’s handling of the spill response, not least of all its information clampdown. In an interview with Mother Jones this week, Dillon, who claims he was fired for raising concerns about the cleanup with his bosses, elaborated on his experiences in the Gulf and vented his frustrations with BP...

Haitian Farmers Reject Monsanto Earthquake Relief Donation and Burn GMO Seeds

In an attempt to backdoor GMO seeds into a new market, Monsanto has taken the opportunity to donate hundreds of tons of GMO seeds to Haiti and is calling it an effort to help the people in Haiti with earthquake relief. However, Monsanto's "generosity" is being met with skepticism and outright rejection.
