Scientist Awed by Size, Density of Undersea Oil Plume in Gulf

Vast underwater concentrations of oil sprawling for miles in the Gulf of Mexico from the damaged, crude-belching BP PLC well are unprecedented in "human history" and threaten to wreak havoc on marine life, a team of scientists said today, a finding confirmed for the first time by federal officials.

Subsea oil plumes found 142 miles from rig:

Clouds of oil have been found drifting underwater in the Gulf of Mexico as far as 142 miles from the wrecked Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, government officials said Tuesday.

The oil firms' profits ignore the real costs

The energy industry has long dumped its damage and, like the banks, made scant provision against disaster. Time to pay up.

Snorkeling along a coral reef near Veracruz, Mexico, in 2002, Texas biologist Wes Tunnell spotted what looked like a ledge of rock covered in sand, shells, algae, and hermit crabs. He knew, from years of research at the reef, that it probably wasn’t a rock at all. He stabbed it with his diving knife. His blade pulled up gunk. ‘Sure enough, it was tar from the Ixtoc spill,’ Tunnell said. Twenty-three years earlier, in 1979, an oil well named Ixtoc I had a blowout in 150 feet of water in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The Mexican national oil company Pemex tried to kill the well with drilling mud, and then with steel and lead balls dropped into the well bore. It tried to contain the oil with a cap nicknamed the Sombrero. Finally, after 290 days, a relief well plugged the hole with cement and the spill came to an end — but only after polluting the Gulf with 138 million gallons of crude...

Attorney: Deepwater Horizon Managers Knew About Oil Rig Problem Before Explosion

"The rig's on fire! I told you this was gonna happen"

Top Houston attorney Tony Buzbee says he has new evidence which indicates that Deepwater Horizon’s managers knew that the BP oil rig had major problems before its explosion on April 20, citing the eyewitness account of a crew member who rescued burning workers on the rig of a conversation between Deepwater Horizon installation manager Jimmy Harrell and someone in Houston. According to the witness, Harrell was screaming, “Are you f... happy? Are you f... happy? The rig’s on fire! I told you this was gonna happen.”
