About 110,000 barrels of oil poured into the Mediterranean two weeks ago after Israeli warplanes hit a coastal power plant. Oil has slicked one-third of Lebanon's coast, and threatens beaches in Syria, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece, yet no cleanup can begin until the fighting is over, says the UN. Meanwhile in northern Israel, huge swaths of forests and fields have been scorched by thousands of Hezbollah rocket strikes.

„Der Krieg zwischen Israel und der Hisbollah ist ein moderner Krieg. Gleich ob Armeen gegeneinander kämpfen oder es sich um einen "asymmetrischen Konflikt" handelt, so sind Zivilisten seit dem 20. Jahrhundert in wachsendem und jetzt im weit überwiegendem Maße die Leidtragenden. Nicht Soldaten oder Kämpfer, sondern vor allem Zivilisten sterben oder werden in militärischen Konflikten verwundet. Israeli Bombs Cut Aid Lifeline

UN aid officials said the bombing of the main coastal highway north from Beirut to the Syrian border earlier in the day had cut an "umbilical cord" of aid supplies. The bombing halted a convoy of eight lorries carrying 150 tonnes of relief shipments, though aid was arriving by air and by sea.

The US occupation forces attempted to prevent Iraqi demonstrators from reaching Baghdad for participation in public protests on Lebanon, scheduled for tomorrow, by opening fire on the bus that was taking them from Najaf to the capital. One demonstrator was killed and 16 injured.
