Study Finds CEO Salaries Increase With Layoffs

Nadia Prupis, Truthout: "Executives of the top 50 job-cutting firms in the US earned 42 percent more than their peers in 2009, according to a report published by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS). As the country's economy continues to struggle, and American workers earn less in weekly wages than they did in the 1970s (adjusted for inflation), executive salaries have remained substantially, disproportionately high. According to the IPS study, 'Executive Excess 2010: CEO Pay and the Great Recession,' after adjusting for inflation, the average CEO pay in 2009 is more than four times its average from the 1980s and approximately eight times what it was throughout the mid-20th century."

Should those estimates hold true, some 45 million people in this country, or more than 1 in 7, were poor last year. It would be the highest single-year increase since the government began calculating poverty figures in 1959. The previous high was in 1980 when the rate jumped 1.3 percentage points to 13 percent during the energy crisis.

The only legitimate reason to keep secrets from the American people is to protect their safety. Troop movements in defensive wars (not to be confused with all wars), the locations and technical specs of defensive measures, the identities of informants providing reliable information on actual bad guys, these are things that must be kept secret for our safety. The identities and locations of publicly-funded torturers should not be kept secret. In fact, they should be broadcast from the rooftops...
