The war on terrorism is crooked, corrupt, and hypocritical

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

06/09/10

The so-called war on terrorism will surely go down in U.S. history as one of the most ridiculous, inane, hypocritical, crooked, corrupt, and destructive federal programs ever. This week, federal officials have been proudly proclaiming the arrest of two New Jersey men as they were preparing to board a plane to Somalia...

Federal crimes and the end of law

Foundation for Economic Education
by William L. Anderson

06/09/10

For the past decade I have focused on the growth of federal criminal law, and in a recent article in Regulation magazine I took a hard look at how this development harms the economy. With the Obama administration’s stated determination to have the Justice Department seek criminal charges in the BP oil spill, I believe we should take a hard look at the entire legal process...

License to kill

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

06/09/10

Nearly a decade after the September 11 attacks, we still have not settled the question of how to deal with terrorism suspects. Should they be in military or civilian custody? Should they receive trials, and if so what kind? After years of acrimonious debate, President Obama is offering a way to settle this argument once and for all: Why not just kill them? Last week U.N. investigator Philip Alston delivered a report on ‘targeted killings’ in which the U.S. government plays a starring role. Under a policy secretly initiated by George W. Bush and expanded by Obama, the CIA and the Joint Special Operations Command track and kill people, including U.S. citizens, based on their alleged ties to Al Qaeda or its allies. The killings, typically carried out by missiles fired from drone aircraft, dangerously blur the line between warfare and summary execution...

They have created a wasteland and call it peace

AntiWar.Com
by Philip Giraldi

06/10/10

In the first century A.D. the Roman historian Tacitus wrote ‘Solitudinem fecerunt, pacem appelunt,’ translated as ‘they have created a wasteland and call it peace.’ He was describing the devastating Roman campaigns against the German tribes under the first emperor Augustus in which all the men capable of carrying weapons were slaughtered and the remainder of the population was sold into slavery. It was the Roman way of waging war, complete destruction of a foreign enemy to serve as a warning against challenging the might of the Caesars. We Americans have inherited the imperial mantle and are the new Romans...

Oil Companies Dishonor Our Troops and Undermine Our Security

T.J. Buonomo, Truthout: "Since 2003, more than 4,300 American troops and perhaps hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have become casualties of a war full of contradictions. One of the most fundamental of these is embodied in U.S. assurances to the Iraqi and American publics that Iraq will be a fully sovereign country upon the United States' military withdrawal at the end of 2011. The lobbying activities of U.S. oil executives and their political allies suggest efforts to perpetuate a more dependent relationship."

Feds Knew of Gulf Spill Risks in 2000, Document Shows

Shashank Bengali, McClatchy Newspapers: "A decade ago, U.S. government regulators warned that a major deepwater oil spill could start with a fire on a drilling rig, prove hard to stop and cause extensive damage to fish eggs and wetlands because there were few good ways to capture oil underwater."

Gulf Oil Spill: BP's Continued Denial Of Underwater Plumes Provokes Ridicule

An oceanographer just back from two weeks of taking water samples in the Gulf of Mexico told a House panel on Wednesday that BP officials are utterly wrong to keep saying there are no large masses of oil lurking below the surface.

BP bets the planet, we lose

In These Times
by Terry J. Allen

06/10/10

As the oil spreads, choking life and livelihood, the hearings and investigations into BP’s gulf hemorrhage are focused on human failures, technical flaws and short-term fixes. These silos of inquiry, while essential, sidestep the deeper problem: Deep sea drilling is inherently risky, and continued use of fossil fuels means increasing reliance on tenuous technologies and dangerous energy sources. One factor ramping up the risk lies in frigid sediments that have rested for eons 1,000 feet or more below sea and tundra. At that depth, hydrate gas (usually methane) is a stable solid, compressed into molecular cages of ice. But if destabilized by a drop in pressure or a rise in temperature, the gas-water compound can quickly expand 164 times in volume. If ignited, even ice-bound hydrates burn...

Military Neglecting Fort Hood Soldiers' Medical Needs

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "At least 50 soldiers from Fort Hood who have medical profiles that should prohibit them from military training have been sent to the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, California, regardless of their conditions. Truthout spoke with some of these soldiers on June 7, before they were to fly back to Fort Hood the next day."

US border guard kills Mexican teen

The Mexican foreign ministry said on Tuesday that the 14-year-old boy died after a US border patrol officer opened fire from the US side of the border on a group who "threw stones".

Witnesses say killed Mexican teen wasn't throwing rocks at Border Patrol agent

Two witnesses to the incident told the Wall Street Journal's Nicholas Casey that Hernandez was standing on the Mexican side of the border with his hands up and had not thrown rocks at the agent.

Mexico-US Tensions Rise as Video Emerges of Boy Just Before Being Shot

Video Captures Another Border Killing

It's a muddy cell phone video, taken from a difficult angle, but the audio recorded on the modest device, is both revealing and chilling: the contents cast doubt on claims by the U.S. Border Patrol, regarding the death of a Mexican national who died in custody after being beaten and electric-shocked by federal agents on May 28.

Border control bogey

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

07/02/10

As if we weren’t already aware, the current occupant of the White House yesterday proved himself every bit the social engineer his predecessors were. Health insurance, energy, the financial industry, education, nation building — in each area and more the head of the executive branch, Barack Obama, has embraced the dominant bipartisan doctrine which proclaims that government planners know best and mere people — interacting according to the principles of consent, cooperation, and competition — know nothing. What would we do without our ‘leaders?’
