5 Million Iraqis Killed, Maimed, Tortured, Displaced

By Fred Branfman

Is the suffering our leaders inflict on innocent civilians relevant to deciding whether to support our present war-making in Afghanistan and Pakistan? Would it matter if the N.Y. Times had run daily profiles and photos of Iraqi civilian victims since 2003, as it did of U.S. victims after 9/11?

Witnessing against torture

CounterPunch
by Kathy Kelly

06/23/10

Many people come to the capitol every day of the year. They are free to ask questions and to make comments. But, if you raise questions and comments of a political nature, police officials believe they must enforce a law to restrict your enactment of this right, even though the Constitution insists that Congress shall make no law to abridge the right of people to assemble peaceably for redress of grievance. We believed that expression of grief and remorse for the lost lives of these three men should properly happen in a place where U.S. people mourn the loss of a president’s life. While a U.S. president possesses near-unimaginable power, the men whom we mourned suffered from unimaginable powerlessness. Earnest mourning of these lost lives was crucial for truthful recognition that the U.S. government has used torture as a means of punishment, possibly even lethal punishment, in violation of international law and basic human rights...

A legal cover for torture?

It’s not enough that the last gang to occupy the Executive Branch got us into two illegal wars, accumulated autocratic powers, violated our civil liberties, and tortured suspects. Now it appears that it kicked things up a notch. Under pressure, UK promises torture guidelines

Macon Telegraph

The British government promised Monday to quickly issue its spies a fresh set of guidelines on how to avoid being complicit in torture. The announcement addresses a legal challenge to the existing guidelines, which human rights group Reprieve said allowed British intelligence agents to gather information extracted through torture — even if they weren’t directly involved in the mistreatment...

Calling for Accountability on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

Andy Worthington, Truthout: "Today is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1997, to mark the ratification of the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on June 26, 1987. As UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan explained on June 26, 1998 (when the day was first marked), 'This is a day on which we pay our respects to those who have endured the unimaginable. This is an occasion for the world to speak up against the unspeakable....' At the time, Annan lamented that, although over 100 States had ratified the Convention, the use of torture was 'still reported' in many of those countries."

Study foretold a consequence of oil leak

Boston Globe

06/21/10

It wasn’t until seven weeks after the BP oil well began gushing that the company acknowledged oil remained hidden under the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, and it continues to dispute the extent of miles-long submerged plumes. But an unusual experiment conducted in 2000 off the coast of Norway, a trial run of a deep-water oil and gas spill that BP helped pay for, showed that oil could remain underwater for some time. The North Atlantic exercise was designed to understand how a spill would behave as the drilling industry plumbed new depths to extract oil and gas. The federal Minerals Management Service and 22 companies took part in the test, at about half the depth of the gulf disaster...

BP and the unmitigated disaster

The Gulf of Mexico could turn into a giant dead zone if some means cannot be found to staunch the flow of oil and toxic gases emerging from the damaged well beneath the Deepwater Horizon. Industry insiders who understand the engineering of wells are beginning to speak openly among themselves of an unmitigated disaster. … The event and previous explosions at its refineries were the result of years of an internal BP philosophy that focused on profits before safety. Whether it was accident-prone refineries or corrosion in the Alaska pipeline, BP cut corners...

Defending aggressors is not a market virtue

Center for a Stateless Society

06/23/10

The left-wing blogosphere is alight with anti-corporate sentiment, and rightfully so, at Congressman Joe Barton’ s (R-TX) apology to British Petroleum. He recently called the $20 billion restitution fund a ’shakedown.’ Although the congressman has rescinded his comments, I also share his strong dislike of this scheme, but not because this is any more of a shakedown than anything else the state does. The American government has a magnificently horrible record of managing any quantity of money both practically and morally, and I don’t see how they would be any better at distributing funds to innocent victims of environmental disasters. The state has also made it standard operating procedure to protect aggressive firms from being brought to complete justice through limited liability laws in an anti-market and fascistic way...

Sympathy for the devil?

Libertarian Minds
by James Padilioni, Jr.

06/23/10

So let me get this straight. We have a court system designed to allow citizens to petition the government for a redress of grievances. However, instead of using the Constitutionally-established judicial system, the president decides that he will tell-not ask, but tell BP that they must put money aside to compensate those who have been harmed as a result of BP’s actions, as well as suspend the payments of dividends to their investors. This fund will also be managed by an unelected, unaccountable third party. And also, don’t forget that for the last 3 weeks the Justice Department has been in the Gulf region looking into what criminal charges they can bring against BP. Here we have the POTUS using his authority, and presumably the threat of his DOJ, to strong arm a private business to do his bidding, without any due process. If this were done to a private citizen, we’d all cry tyranny. But when it happens to a large corporation, the cries are few and far between. There are many reasons why establishing a fund may be a good thing, but there are no legal ones...

Oil gushes and power rushes

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

06/23/10

Last week, after President Obama pressured BP to create a compensation fund for victims of its oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico, Rep. Joe Barton denounced the arrangement as ‘a $20 billion shakedown.’ The Texas Republican said the fund has ‘no legal standing’ and circumvents the ‘due process system’ for assigning blame and ordering compensation. Although Barton was widely mocked for appearing to defend a huge corporation that is responsible for the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, he had a point. Obama’s grandstanding money grab exemplifies the lawless unilateralism that he condemned as a candidate yet embraced as a president...

Wikileaks to release files about deadly US airstrike on Afghan civilians

Washington Post

06/21/10

Wikileaks.org plans to release as soon as this week documents related to a U.S. airstrike that killed Afghan civilians last year and plans to release combat footage of the incident this summer, the founder of the whistleblower site said in an interview Monday. Julian Assange said the documents pertain to an attack near the Afghan village of Garani, which killed scores of civilians in May 2009. In April, Wikileaks released video footage of a U.S. Apache helicopter attack in Iraq that killed several civilians, including two employees of the Reuters news service...

Wanted by the CIA: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange

Belfast Telegraph [Ireland]

07/19/10

“There are not many journalists who, when you ask them if they are being followed by the CIA, say ‘We have surveillance events from time to time.’ Actually it’s not a question I’ve ever asked before, and Julian Assange does not call himself a journalist. But the answer is typical of this 41-year-old former computer-hacker: cryptic, dispassionate, and faintly self-important. As the founder of Wikileaks, Assange has become the pin-up of web-age investigative journalists. The US has wanted him for questioning since March, after he posed a video showing an American helicopter attack that left several Iraqi civilians and two Reuters journalists dead. Understandably, he now avoids the US, and keeps his movements secret, though it’s thought he operates out of Sweden and is spending time in Iceland, where a change in the law is creating a libel-free haven for journalists. But if the CIA spooks wanted him that badly, couldn’t they have turned up, as a hundred adoring student journalists did, to hear him talk at the Centre for Investigative Journalism 10 days ago?

Obama is no Superman

As the ecology in the Gulf circles the sticky tar drain of evolution, and countless livelihoods spanning at least four states going down with it, Americans are wondering where their Superman is. The disappointment that President Barack Obama seems stuck in the phone booth, still deciding whether to get his suit on, is nothing new. Those of us hoping for similar action in Afghanistan have been waiting for more than a year. Turns out that Obama doesn’t really do bold and heroic — it’s not his style — and he certainly doesn’t come off as decisive, unless he’s pushed. Where George Bush was ‘the decider,’ Obama seems to lead by committee, and not the kind of committee that gets things done...

It really is hard to imagine many things worse, more criminal, than imprisoning people for years whom you know are innocent, while fighting in court to keep them imprisoned. But that’s exactly what the Obama administration is doing. … Of course, none of this is new for the Obama administration; it’s consistent with their course of conduct from the start. I highlight this today only because there is an obvious, concerted effort by a slew of Democratic Beltway pundits over the last month or so to attack the so-called ‘Left’ for daring to express displeasure with the Obama administration, and to demonize those objections as unserious, shrill, irrational, purist and all the other cliches long used by this same cadre of party apparatchiks for the same purpose...

How the state causes collapse

New Kind of Mind
by Chris George

06/30/10

The State finances itself initially through the rent (taxes) it demands on its expansive land claim. But the State attracts those who would want to be part of it — who want to live off the production of others — and, despite its barriers to entry, it grows. If it were to not expand its scope while its size grew, people would likely become angry and revolt as a result of its increased tax burden. Therefore, to accommodate its growing size, it must expand its scope of control into other realms of the economy, perhaps by ‘nationalizing’ education or welfare services. In other words, the State removes control of the public goods from the public...
