The Great Jobs Depression Worsens, and the Choice Ahead Grows Starker

Why the Big Lie About the Job Crisis? And the $10 Trillion Answer
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/09/03-12

--------

Unemployment Edges Up to 9.6 Percent as Weak Job Growth Continues

Dean Baker, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "The unemployment rate edged up to 9.6 percent in August as the economy shed 54,000 jobs. The decline was entirely attributable to the loss of 114,000 temporary Census jobs. Excluding these jobs, the economy created 60,000 jobs. With job growth for the prior two months revised up by 123,000, excluding the Census jobs, the August pace is roughly even with June and July."

Abberufung von Thilo Sarrazin ist überfällig

2. September 2010

Come home America

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

09/03/10

Politically, as well as economically, the Afghan war is increasingly unsustainable, and Obama appears to realize this: thus his defensive rhetoric and the waving of the bloody shirt. That’s always the War Party’s argument of last resort. Yet polls show it isn’t working all that well, and the President rightly fears a rebellion by the voters: he’s already seeing a revolt against his domestic policies by the tea partiers, and the Democrats are down by a whopping 10 percent in the polls. What if Americans wake up to the fact that not only are our own banksters being bailed out, but so are Afghanistan’s?

The American people and the politics of American identity

The Fly Bottle
by Will Wilkinson

09/01/10

There are multiple conceptions of American creed equally consistent with American history. That’s why movements to glorify, elevate, and honor a particular conception of American identity based on a particular conception of the American creed necessarily marginalize equally or more historically plausible conceptions and therefore tend to suggest that citizens who favor those conceptions are less or even un-American. It seems pretty clear to me that this is exactly how the conservative politics of American identity works...

Don’t just turn the page, close the book on the Iraq war

Liberty For All
by Wrights 2012 staff

09/02/10

It’s time do more than just ‘turn the page’ on America’s foreign wars. We should close the book and put it pack on the shelf, said potential Libertarian presidential candidate R. Lee Wrights in response to President Obama’s address to the nation Tuesday night. ‘President Obama said he was announcing that ‘the American combat mission in Iraq’ has ended and that it was time to ‘turn the page’ on a ‘remarkable chapter in American history,’ Wrights said. ‘It is time to do more than just turn the page. It is time to close the book of war, put it back on the shelf, and never refer to it again’...

The war’s end

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

09/02/10

America’s military misadventure in Iraq comes to an end this week, with Tuesday’s official declaration of an end to combat operations and a handover of authority to the Iraqi government. It’s a strange end — neither victory nor defeat — to a war made all the stranger since it’s not entirely clear what’s ending here. … it’s also a clear demonstration of the fact that the Obama administration’s policy of disengagement has succeeded as spectacularly as the Bush administration’s policy of invasion failed. And it’s important to recall the scope of that failure. The war was initially framed primarily in terms of the need to halt an Iraqi nuclear-weapons program that didn’t exist...

Assessing the Iraq war

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

09/01/10

As President Obama gave a self-congratulatory speech about keeping his campaign promise to remove U.S. combat forces from Iraq by the end of August, he accomplished this feat by merely redefining the mission of the 50,000 combat-trained U.S. forces remaining there to ‘advising and assisting’ Iraqi forces. Of course, this really means that we are not out of the woods yet in that fractured and violence-prone country...

Defense Contractor Money Fueling Push to Militarize the US-Mexico Border

Mike Ludwig, Truthout: "After months of prodding from anti-immigration politicians, the entire US-Mexico border is now being watched by the Predator B unmanned surveillance aircraft commonly known as Predator drones.... Here's some uncomfortable news: several of the politicians who pushed to bring more Predator drones to the border have received campaign contributions from military contractors that make drone aircraft and parts."

The Human Cost of Government Waste and Fraud

Dina Rasor, Truthout: "Who really suffers from fraudulent and wasteful spending? The bureaucracies get their money, the members of Congress get jobs in their districts and we put it on the federal credit card even though China owns a large portion of our debt. But there are programs that get cut or have less money because of Big Oil's and Big Weapons' wasteful and fraudulent spending. One of these areas is health research, something that the US excels at (versus health care), and we can lead the world in saving lives."

Democrats Unlikely to Repeal Tax Cuts for the Rich

David Lightman, McClatchy Newspapers: "Tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 expire at the end of this year.... However, a small but growing number of moderate Democrats are balking at boosting taxes on the rich. Many face electorates that recoil at the mention of any tax increase. Some represent areas that are loaded with wealthier taxpayers. Further, some incumbent senators who don't face voters this fall are reluctant to increase taxes on anyone while the economy remains sluggish.... Without their support, the push to raise rates on the rich probably will fail."

Unemployment Affects Three Out Of Four Americans

More than half of Americans say they believe the downturn reflects a "lasting economic change" (56%) rather than a "temporary economic downturn" (43%). Large majorities believe that the economy will remain in recession or worse a year from now.

Obama's Iraq Speech

By Bill Van Auken

The most chilling passage came at the end of the 19-minute speech, when Obama declared, "Our troops are the steel in our ship of state," adding, "And though our nation may be traveling through rough waters, they give us confidence that our course is true."

The Audacity of Cynicism

By Elise Hendrick

Barack Obama's Iraq speech - is an impressive entry in the annals of war propaganda. In it, he glosses over a criminal war as 'a remarkable chapter' in US history, and creates the false impression that the occupation of Iraq is over. He places the responsibility rebuilding a society out of the rubble we created on the shoulders of the Iraqi people.
