Der Bundestag entscheidet am Donnerstag über den weiteren ISAF-Einsatz der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan. Dem Parlament liegt dazu ein Antrag der Bundesregierung vor, das Mandat um 14 Monate bis zum 13. Dezember 2009 zu verlängern, um eine Diskussion über den Kriegseinsatz aus dem Bundestagswahlkampf herauszuhalten. Zudem sollen künftig bis zu 4500 Soldaten und damit 1000 mehr als im bisher geltenden Mandat eingesetzt werden können. Aus der Friedensbewegung kam heftige Kritik an der geplanten Mandatsverlängerung. Reiner Braun und Peter Strutynski vom Bündnis "Dem Frieden eine Chance - Truppen raus aus Afghanistan" monierten, während alle Welt über einen Strategiewechsel und über einen Ausstieg aus dem Krieg diskutiere, setze die Bundesregierung weiter auf die militärische Karte und trage so zur Eskalation des bislang schon sieben Jahre dauernden Krieges bei. Mit jeder Aufstockung der internationalen Truppen sei bislang die Sicherheitslage prekärer geworden und die Kämpfe hätten sich ausgeweitet.

It would make sense to announce a deadline for pulling out the foreign troops and start negotiating for a final peace settlement in Afghanistan now. Waiting is unlikely to produce a better deal. Which is probably why President Hamid Karzai said last week that he had asked the king of Saudi Arabia to mediate in negotiations with the Taliban.

Keine Verlängerung des Mandates der Bundeswehr!
