Congress's response to WikiLeaks: shoot the messenger

Despite the release of some 92,000 classified documents that cast doubt on the success of the US war effort in Afghanistan, all but the staunchest antiwar members of Congress focused their most scathing words Monday on WikiLeaks, the website that published the material.

This Was All Secret?

Eugene Robinson: "The tens of thousands of classified military documents posted on the Internet Sunday confirm what critics of the war in Afghanistan already knew or suspected: We are wading deeper into a long-running, morally ambiguous conflict that has virtually no chance of ending well. The Obama administration, our NATO allies and the Afghan government responded to the documents - made public by a gadfly organization known as Wikileaks - by saying they tell us nothing new. Which is the problem."

Leaked documents present bleak view of Afghan war

Wall Street Journal

07/25/10

Thousands of secret military documents were released Sunday by a Web-based organization, a gigantic leak of classified information that appeared to present a bleak view of Afghanistan war and could have a profound impact on the public perception of the conflict. The release of the documents, which were obtained and made public by the website WikiLeaks, evoked the Pentagon Papers, the secret history of the Vietnam War, which when published contradicted the public narrative of that war and played a role in turning public opinion against it...

Bradley Manning’s gift

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/26/10

They said the huge cache of classified documents — including 250,000 diplomatic messages passed from US embassies around the world to Washington — was a fantasy, ‘boasting’ by Pfc. Bradley Manning, the intelligence analyst who gave Wikileaks that video of US soldiers laughing and shouting ‘good shot!’ as they mowed down Iraqi civilians. The ‘hi tech’ media, especially Wired magazine, did everything they could do discredit and smear him, including spreading rumors about his alleged sexuality. Now, with the release of over 91,000 internal US government communications, intelligence analyses and incident reports via Wikileaks, the motive behind the determined effort to smear Manning and shut down Wikileaks is all too apparent...

In a take-it-or-leave-it gesture, the Senate voted Thursday night to reject more than $20 billion in domestic spending the House had tacked on to its $60 billion bill to fund President Barack Obama's troop surge in Afghanistan.

Time to Make a Fuss

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "Obama's latest supplemental spending request, which would sign away $33 billion more for Afghanistan and Iraq, is hovering on the brink of passage. Those billions would be heaped on top of the $159.3 billion that Congress approved (with little fuss) for the wars in May. Now, if ever, Congress should be fussing - and so should the rest of us."

No More Afghanistan War Funding

In the wake of 90,000 leaked documents finally exposing the truth of how completely misguided the occupation of Afghanistan is, and how badly it's really going, the New York Times is reporting that

"In Congress, House leaders were rushing to hold a vote on a critical war-financing bill as early as Tuesday, fearing that the disclosures could stoke Democratic opposition to the measure."

Stop The Afghanistan War Funding Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1053.php

The truth WOULD tend to put a crimp in continuing hideously bad policy, so of course they want to rush to extend the bad policy even more, before even more truth comes out. Well, we the people have our own urgent message for Congress. Stop it. Stop it cold. Stop it now. Or don't count on being in office after the next election.

If there were a law requiring truth in political advertising, all those politicians shouting, "Support our troops" would be shouting "Support our war profiteers" instead. The ongoing occupation of Afghanistan is not the biggest gift to those recruiting terrorists to attack Americans all over the world. No, Iraq is the biggest gift in that regard, but Afghanistan is a close second.

It's over. It's beyond redemption. The only justification for going into Afghanistan in the first place was to get Osama bin Laden. They failed to do that. That means the mission was a TOTAL failure. It was a lost cause 9 years and a trillion dollars ago. And parking hundreds of thousands of our troops there for a hundred years, like ducks in an IED shooting gallery, will not change that reality.

We have generated so much hatred against America after a decade of collateral genocide in the Middle East, that if Osama bin Laden was the starting center of the Karachi Jihadists basketball team, nobody would breathe a word of it for a thousand miles. That's just how bad it is.

So pick up a 25 pack of the "Corporations Are Not The People" bumper stickers for a modest donation if you have not done so already, because the war-making corporations are just pursuing their own profit at the expense of the good foreign policy interest of the American people in all this. Any donation you make is what makes it possible for us to send a free sticker to anyone who cannot make a donation right now. But we still need your energy to distribute the bulk packs as widely as possible.

Bulk Corporations Are Not The People bumper stickers: http://www.peaceteam.net/bumper_stickers_bulk.php

And you can always get one free for yourself with no donation required, if you have not requested yours already.

Obama signs war spending bill

USA Today

07/29/10

President Obama on Thursday signed legislation to fund his troop surge in Afghanistan, even though it was stripped of money for domestic stimulus programs. Congress passed the bill on Tuesday and Obama signed it without public remarks in a low-key Oval Office session. Democratic leaders had to rely on Republican support to pass the $59 billion measure, which provides money for 30,000 additional troops in Afghanistan and other programs...

The GOP chairman was right about Afghanistan

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

07/14/10

They used to say the truth shall set you free. These days it might get you fired. Apparently, stumbling onto the truth is a grave offense in the Republican Party. Ask Michael Steele, its chairman. Steele provoked the wrath of Republican neoconservatives William Kristol, Liz Cheney (the former vice president’s daughter), and Sen. John McCain by saying that ‘the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan … because everyone who has tried over a thousand years of history has failed, and there are reasons for that’...

If Americans care only sparingly for their paid, professional soldiers -- the ones A.O. Scott says deserve 90 minutes of our time -- they care even less about Afghan civilians. That's why they don't understand war.

It’s Obama’s war, all right

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

07/13/10

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele caught grief recently for suggesting the war was doomed to fail. Steele, who has offended everyone from pro-lifers to Rush Limbaugh fans, truly has the gift of gaffe. But he wasn’t wrong to call Afghanistan a ‘war of Obama’s choosing.’ A recent National Journal graphic shows that under the president’s Afghan ’surge,’ OEF deployments passed Iraq troop levels in ‘a strategic pivot point’ earlier this year. Obama, Steele suggested, had bought into the Democratic ’script’ that has prevailed since the 2004 Kerry campaign: Iraq’s a distraction — ‘the battle should really be in Afghanistan.’ Obama’s escalation of that battle raises young John Kerry’s question about Vietnam: How do you ask someone ‘to be the last man to die for a mistake?’
