The Return of the Public Servant

by JB Williams

These folks are just plain old fashioned spoiled beyond rotten. They won’t give our country back or give up the lavish lifestyles that we have to so generously allowed them to live at our expense. We will have to take it all back and there’s no time like the present to begin that process. We can’t change yesterday and tomorrow may never come at the rate we are going. Today is the only day we can do anything about........

The downsizing of American foreign policy

The New Republic
by Michael Mandelbaum

08/10/10

Just as the recession and the new financial regulations will deprive banks and similar institutions of some of the resources they controlled before September 15, 2008, so the scope of America’s international activities will contract in the years ahead because the American government will have far less money with which to conduct the nation’s foreign policy. Because that foreign policy underwrites global stability and prosperity, the contraction of American power will adversely affect countries everywhere, even those that complain about the way the United States uses its power...

Smearing Bradley Manning

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

08/11/10

The smear campaign against Bradley Manning took off the moment he was arrested, with professional snitch Adrian ‘I Have Asperger’s Syndrome’ Lamo detailing how he supposedly ensnared Manning in his web and adding that the young intelligence analyst was merely vying for ‘attention’ by ‘vacuuming up’ all the secret data he could just for the h... of it. … But that was just the beginning of the effort to discredit a very brave and idealistic young man...

The accused leaker to WikiLeaks appears to have acted out of idealism. Now that we've seen the results of our wars, can we say the same?

Imagine if We Never Ended the War on Alcohol

By Cenk Uygur

These days it doesn't seem politically possible to ever change course. If you start a war, the only acceptable answer is to escalate it. We can never surrender, even if we should.

Political Prisoners in America

By Stephen Lendman

How do you go into Iraq (and) Afghanistan telling people about their democracy when (you've got innocent people) locked down in prison for 30 - 40 years as political prisoners....(activists) against social injustice, colonialism, and/or imperialism, (incarcerated for) their political commitments."

The Omar Khadr case makes a mockery of US justice

Omar Khadr was a badly wounded boy of 15 when, in 2002, US forces captured him in Afghanistan. As the dust settled on a suspected al-Qaeda compound after a firefight that July, troops discovered him slumped in the rubble among the dead, leaning against a wall.

Amnesty International says Omar Khadr trial should not go ahead

Amnesty said the USA had not listened to repeated appeals from the international community, including senior UN officials, about what it has called the "unfair trial of an individual accused of alleged war crimes committed when he was a child."

Officer off Gitmo “jury” for agreeing with Obama

MSNBC

08/11/10

A veteran U.S. Army officer who agreed with President Barack Obama that the Guantanamo Bay prison should be closed was excluded from the jury in a U.S. military commission trial Wednesday after prosecutors objected that he had ‘pre-conceived’ views that might jeopardize their case. The move came as prosecutors and jurors selected a seven-person jury of military officers to hear the case of Omar Khadr, the so-called ‘child soldier’ accused of hurling a hand grenade that killed an American soldier in a firefight in Afghanistan eight years ago...

Obama Is Embracing Abusive Bush Policies

Deb Weinstein, Truthout: "For disillusioned Obama supporters, the ACLU's July report 'Establishing the New Normal' is not a heartening read. After being voted into office on promises that included undoing abuses carried out under the Bush administration - promises to protect privacy, to end government-sanctioned torture and rendition programs and to end the use of military commissions for non-enemy combatants - President Obama's administration is proving it is far easier to tow the line than buck a trend."

White House: “Crazy” liberal Obama critics “ought to be drug tested”

Raw Story

08/10/10

The White House is sparing no punches to some of its critics on the ‘professional left,’ describing them as insatiable and unrealistic. In an interview with Sam Youngman of The Hill published Tuesday morning, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs unleashed a series of forceful attacks on some unnamed progressive critics of President Barack Obama. ‘I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,’ Gibbs said. ‘I mean, it’s crazy.’ The paper described the president’s spokesman as ’simmering with anger’ and ‘in furious disbelief’ over some of Obama’s liberal detractors, from whom he has faced regular criticism for not pushing a progressive agenda more authoritatively...

Robert Gibbs attacks the fringe losers of the left

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

Robert Gibbs — in one of the most petulant, self-pitying outbursts seen from a top political official in recent memory, half derived from a paranoid Richard Nixon rant and the other half from a Sean Hannity/Sarah Palin caricature of The Far Left — is here to tell you that the real reason you’re dissatisfied with the President is because you’re a fringe, ideological, Leftist extremist ingrate who needs drug counseling …

Is Robert Gibbs Right About the "Professional Left"?

By Mike Whitney

Obama can talk-the-talk, but he can't walk-the-walk. He can roll up his sleeves, point at the horizon, and work his magic on a stadium full of fans. But he can't shut down Gitmo or indict a few bankers who blew up the financial system.
