How Many Iraqis Did We "Liberate" From Life on Earth?

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "Is there a man or woman in America today who is willing to stand at noon in the public square and claim that demands to bomb, invade, and occupy other people's countries have anything to do with human liberation? If such people can be found, let them answer a few simple questions about the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. How many Iraqis did we "liberate" from the companionship of their loved ones? How many Iraqis did we "liberate" from dwelling in the houses and towns and the country of their birth? How many Iraqis did we 'liberate' from life on Earth?"

"Blood on Our Hands"

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "While most media continue to ignore the US-installed disaster in Iraq, author Nicolas Davies refuses to do so, and his book 'Blood on our Hands: the American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq' could not be released at a better time."

Iraq: We’re “withdrawing” but not leaving

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

08/06/10

Like everything else in our oh-so-modern world, things are not quite what they seem: ‘complexities’ get in the way. So let’s look at what is actually happening, not what the President and his amen corner would like us to see, before we throw our hats in the air. To begin with, Obama’s original campaign promise was to get all the troops out by May of this year. But I guess we aren’t supposed to remember that, and it would be rude to bring it up. Secondly, we aren’t leaving at all — there’s that bothersome ‘transitional force’ (as the Prez puts it) of up to 50,000 troops...

Blair Was Told Iraq Threat Not A Concern

By Humberto

Lady Manningham-Buller, Director General of the UK Security Service from 2002 until 2007, told the investigators that Mr Blair's fears over Saddam arming terrorists were a mere "hypothetical theory", and certainly "not a concern in the short term or medium term to my colleagues or myself" - the information available was simply not "substantial enough".

New Dawn, Old Story

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "In March of 2003, a pretend president launched a war of choice to pretend he was protecting America. The war, called Operation Iraqi Freedom, began under the premise that Iraq was in possession of 26,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons - which is 1,000,000 pounds - of sarin, VX and mustard gas, 30,000 munitions to deliver the stuff, mobile biological weapons labs, uranium from Niger for use in a 'robust' nuclear weapons program, and connections to al Qaeda that led directly to the attacks of September 11. George W. Bush said these things, and the media decided it must be so, and we were off to the races."

Rebranded Occupation Relying Heavily on Private Military Contractors?

President Obama said Monday in a speech before the Disabled American Veterans national convention in Atlanta that the US military is on target to withdraw all its combat troops from Iraq by the end of August. We speak with independent journalist Jeremy Scahill, who says this instead marks the beginning of a downsized and rebranded occupation that will rely heavily on private military forces.

High Iraq deaths cast doubt on US stability talk

LaCrosse Tribune

08/01/10

While concern is rising in the U.S. about the war in Afghanistan, the Americans are anxious to show evidence of progress in their other conflict — Iraq. New Iraqi government figures tell a different story, however, showing civilian casualties hitting their highest level in more than two years — figures the U.S. rushed on Sunday to dispute...

The twenty years war

Boston Globe
by John Tirman

08/01/10

Twenty years ago tomorrow, Saddam Hussein sent Iraqi troops into Kuwait, seized the capital, occupied the country, and sent the Kuwaiti ruling family into Saudi Arabia. The United States, Britain, and other major powers responded quickly, imposed sanctions on Iraq and told Saddam to quit Kuwait. Thus began the first of three phases of what has become, in effect, our Twenty Years War, an extraordinary American venture. How and why has this happened? Two strains of conventional wisdom purport to explain. … But these explanations are incomplete. The Twenty Years War is only the latest manifestation of a recurrent American tendency: the ‘rrand to the wilderness,’ to use the Puritans’ phrase, in which we (European-origin Americans) would tame and subdue the savages of the wilderness, extract its bounty, and remake it in our own image...
