The Erosion of Individual Liberties: When Justice and Politics Become One

Lt. Col. Barry Wingard, Truthout: "In the "War on Terror," I am amazed how every time our enemy takes action, it sets into motion a scramble by our government to take away the individual rights of Americans. Will we reach a point at which we will be completely stripped of our civil liberties in the name of eliminating danger from external threats?"

Lesen Sie weiter:

“Freedom agenda” failures and failed states

The American Conservative
by Daniel Larison

07/05/10

There is something obviously wrong when Fred Hiatt, friend of warmongers and torture apologists, holds forth on the dangers to liberty around the world. Here was the line that was the most jarring to me: ‘Taking advantage of their control of television, they mobilized ideologies of nationalism and anti-terrorism to undermine the rhetoric of freedom.’ Of course, Hiatt is referring here to various authoritarian states, but he seems to have no notion that apart from the reference to television that statement could just as easily be applied to his own op-ed pages and the politicians he has defended over the last decade. For that matter, the measures he and his allies have favored haven’t just undermined the rhetoric of freedom, but have seriously undermined the limits on government power and significantly damaged the substance of American liberty and the liberty of people in other nations as well. More perversely, they did all of this while pretending to celebrate American freedoms. One might ask why Hiatt expects freedom to be flourishing elsewhere in the world when our own authoritarians have worked so hard to harm it here at home with security measures, power grabs and grossly illegal activities...

Stand 11.08.2010 (pdf) http://www.datenschutz-berater.de/pdf/Beschaeftigtendatenschutz_E_11082010.pdf

Michael Sommer: Echter Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz notwendig

Terrorism: Why they want to kill us

Huffington Post

No doubt, some terrorists hope to reestablish the caliphate or knock Madonna off of television. But most anti-American terrorists appear to be motivated by something much more mundane: responding to U.S. government depredations in their own nations and other Muslim lands. Unfortunately, the Obama administration appears to be as clueless as its predecessor. After Shahzad’s arrest U.S. officials raced to Islamabad to urge Pakistan to do more to stop terrorism. But Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said simply: ‘This is a blowback. This is a reaction. And you could expect that’...

The Tea Party is dangerous

AlterNet
by Adele M. Stan

07/01/10

The impulse to dismiss the Tea Party movement is understandable, especially given the kook factor (something that every grassroots movement has). The wacky signs, the crazy rhetoric about health care as some form of tyranny: How could this add up to a force able to defeat the massive coalition that led to President Obama’s election? Charles P. Pierce, writing at Esquire’s blog, expresses this view with his claim that the Tea Party movement isn’t really a movement at all, but rather ‘the kind of noisy paranoid lunacy that used to be stapled to lampposts, or hollered about by people you would avoid in the public parks.’ Some of that is true, but it also feeds an attendant denial of the kind a damage such a movement — or non-movement, in Pierce’s view — can do...

The Palin-ization of politics

Mother Jones
by Kevin Drum

07/13/10

Palin is, in some sense, sui generis. And yet, I wonder if her press strategy is really such a unique consequence of her celebrity-hood or rather a sign of things to come? There’s no question that she’s pulled off her particular schtick better than anyone else in American politics, but there are others who have gone a ways down this road too. One is Barack Obama, who restricted press access to a startling degree during his presidential campaign. Keeping presidential campaign reporters on a tight leash is a trend that’s been building for years, with every campaign more tightly controlled than the last, but still, Obama pretty clearly took this to a new level. The other example who comes to mind (since I live in California), is Meg Whitman, who just ran a high-profile primary campaign in a big state with virtually no interaction with the mainstream press. She gave speeches, she ran ads (boy did she run ads), and she spoke to friendly reporters occasionally, but that was about it. And guess what? It worked. She proved that you really don’t need the press anymore to run a successful campaign...

That quickly became clear following last September’s unexpectedly enormous rally in Washington organized by Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks, the event that helped put the movement on the map. With crowd estimates ranging from 75,000 to 2 million, the rally was such a hit that conservative activists are planning a sequel this year. A bunch of them actually. And these competing events have led to confusion and infighting among the tea party faithful...

Iran must import the majority of its oil from foreign corporations and nations, since it does not have the technology needed to refine the fuel that it pumps from its soil. NATO-General Petraeus nimmt mehr tote Zivilisten in Kauf

30. Juni 2010

Das will Petraeus zurück nehmen.

http://www.die-linke.de/nc/presse/presseerklaerungen/detail/artikel/abzug-statt-durchhalteparolen/

20. Juli 2010

In Kabul nichts Neues!

How the sneaky hands of the big banks are working overtime to rip you off

AlterNet
by Zach Carter

07/15/10

In 2009, banks reaped over $38 billion in overdraft fees from their own customers, while posting a total combined profit of just $12.5 billion. Without overdrafts, many banks would have scored massive losses last year, and possibly gone under. Instead, they booked epic bonuses. It can come as a huge shock to get hit with a rash of overdraft fees. You open a bank statement to find that you are not only broke, but deep in the hole thanks to several $30 or $40 charges. Your first reaction is shame. How could I have let this happen? But looking into the ways that banks conduct their overdrafts, you come to realize that you’ve simply been scammed...

Why The Greater Depression Still Lies Ahead

Messrs. Barack Obama, Benjamin Bernanke and Timothy Geithner do not understand the real cause of this debt crisis. They are politicians first and economists or students of the market second--if at all. Therefore, it is not wise to count on them to tell us when the Great Recession is over, or to provide a plan to prevent another one in the future.

The state of secession

Let A Thousand Nations Bloom
by William Miller

06/28/10

The most amazing contrast exists between the attitudes of the citizenry in third-world and first-world countries. The concept of withdrawing from an oppressive government is accepted by the public in the less developed countries, whereas the ’sophisticated’ public here in the United States deems secession to be unconstitutional at best and even treasonous by many, demanding that the people remain shackled to their government, no matter how tyrannical it may become. Yet many Americans feel increasingly oppressed by their government, as witnessed by their ongoing gatherings of protest, waving their ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ flags...

Government stopping charities from feeding the homeless

The National Coalition for the Homeless has issued a report detailing laws and ordinances in a couple of dozen localities across the nation that prohibit charities — churches, civic organizations, charities, etc. — from feeding the homeless. Or, at least, inhibit their ability to do so with burdensome regulation. … This seems like lunacy to me. There are people who are destitute and hungry. There are other people who are willing to give of their own time, talent and wealth to provide for those people. But the government is limiting their ability to do so, or in some instances stopping them...

A defining vote on Afghanistan

The Nation
by Katrina vanden Heuvel

07/01/10

More than six months after the implementation of the Obama/McChrystal strategy, and with one year to go before the beginning withdrawal of US forces, it’s clear that the strategy in Afghanistan is failing on nearly all fronts. It’s critical that we now turn to a more fundamental exit debate: How do we change course and craft a responsible strategy to end the war? Tonight the House will have an opportunity to do just that with two votes — on the $33 billion Afghanistan war supplemental and an amendment introduced by Congressman Jim McGovern that would require, at long last, an exit strategy including a timetable for the completion of the redeployment of US troops...

Stop The Afghanistan Occupation, We Must Stop The Corporations, And THEN The Wars Will End

At what point are we going to admit that Afghanistan, now at nine years being called the longest war in American history, is just an endless and permanently unwelcome occupation? It's never, ever going to end until we the people finally cry out to put an end to it.

Now that General McChrystal has been fired for being too publicly frank about a lot of stuff, including the fact that there is no hope of "victory" in Afghanistan, his replacement by General Petraeus offers little hope of an exit any time soon either. Instead, he warns things there are going to get worse, at a time when casualties are already setting records.

Tell Congress to End The Afghanistan Occupation

Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1050.php

We have NO national security interest in occupying so many countries in the Middle East. Quite the contrary, it just makes us more insecure and unsafe by breeding hatred and revenge for America's military arrogance all over the world. If the Cheney/Bush administration had not been so indifferently asleep at the switch the 9/11 attacks could have easily been prevented. By their own admission all they had to do was "connect the dots". Occupying Afghanistan does nothing to advance that mission.

The founders of our country in their wisdom sought to preclude a "king" from having the power to launch wars for the enlargement of their own power, to the detriment of the interests of the people. But today we have a new class of kings, corporate monoliths in the military and energy sectors, that are driving the bus whoever sits in the White House. And it does not help that to do their bidding the Cheney/Bush administration usurped every power they could get their hands on, none of which have been repudiated by President Obama.

That is why we must recognize that war is nothing but a perpetual profit center for corporations acting only in their own interests, and it is only by confronting the encroaching domination of corporations that we can ever actually put an end to war.

Help us get this message out by picking up a 25 pack of the "Corporations Are NOT The People" bumper stickers to give to your friends and neighbors, just as hundreds and hundreds of your fellow progressive policy activists already have.

They tell us we must be in Afghanistan to defeat Al Qaeda. But Al Qaeda is not in Afghanistan, they long ago fled to Pakistan and other more friendly territories. Our own military estimates there are less than 100 Al Qaeda actually in Afghanistan. That means we are spending a billion dollars a year chasing each one of these phantoms, and just making more enemies in the process.

Worse yet, if General Petraeus is to emulate in Afghanistan his bribe the militants strategy to temporarily reduce the violence (otherwise known as the "surge"), that means even more of our tax dollars going directly into the pockets of warlord, insurgents and worse, on top of the millions already going to them already.

This is utter lunacy. Nine billion dollars on shrink wrapped pallets went missing in Iraq in one gulp. Our own treasury may now be the primary source of financing (a grave federal crime) for the terrorists we were told we were there to take out. But the corporations love that. It just means a "war on terror" for all eternity and a permanent boom business for the corporate death and destruction merchants.

Please take action now by speaking out. Only your voice can make a difference. Only your voice has ever made a difference.

Juli 2010: http://www.labournet.de/internationales/kanada/polizeistaat.html

Crony capitalism and corporate welfare: Is this $30 billion worth of corruption?

Do mere politicians really know how much credit should be given to small businesses? They sure seem to think so. The House voted to pass something called the ‘Small Business Lending Act of 2010′ on June 17th. This bill will expand the national debt by $30 billion in an effort to encourage more lending to small businesses...

We all know we hate classism, but at this point, the economic class makes money just for being them. A working man might hope to have a small house or apartment by his wits and hard work. But everything else is owned. All of the productive resrources, the mineral rights under your feet, they even propose to own the air that you breathe at least in the inverse: BP’s mistakes are busy pumping highly toxic organic gasses into THEIR air. Know how you know they own it? The United States Military is protecting their proprietary rights. By keeping journalists and researchers away, the USA, our military and a FOREIGN CORPORATION assert that’s it’s their air, not yours. They can do what they please with it, even Ron Paul says so: do not mess with private enterprise. And you still have freedom of choice. Don’t like the air? Stop breathing it...

The New National Security State

In this exclusive excerpt from his forthcoming spy thriller, "Inside Out," former CIA operative turned bestselling author Barry Eisler "takes us on a tour of the darkest crevices of the new National Security State." As constitutional scholar and Harper's contributor Scott Horton notes, "Inside Out" is "a brilliant work of fiction - but is it really so fictional? Eisler's plot lines move dangerously close to real life; they are animated by a reality behind the headlines."

In case Americans care: Afghanistan war “will not miss a beat”

Libertarian Minds
by Steven Handel

06/26/10

It’s hard to imagine that the recent change in personnel will have much effect on our current efforts in Afghanistan. Apparently — to Obama — this is a good thing. After announcing McChrystal’s resignation Obama insisted that ‘The strategy hasn’t changed,’ and ‘we will not miss a beat.’ Yippee. But perhaps missing a beat — or rather ending this old American interventionist song-and-dance for good — is exactly what the United States should do...

Obama vs. the US Army

Human Events
by Patrick J. Buchanan

06/24/10

In confiding to Rolling Stone their unflattering opinions of the military acumen of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones, Dick Holbrooke and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his staff were guilty of colossal stupidity. And President Obama had cause to cashier them. Yet his decision to fire McChrystal may prove both unwise and costly. For McChrystal, unlike Gen. MacArthur, never challenged the war policy — he is carrying it out — and Barack Obama is no Harry Truman...

An obscure but unsilenceable instinct makes us always want to be on the right side. This instinct is the beginning of morality in foreign policy, but it can also be the beginning of moralizing, which obscures and distorts reality. Recently, the Guardian website devoted its top headline to an ‘exclusive’ about the publication of a scholarly book documenting that Israel, thirty-five years ago, discussed sharing nuclear technology with South Africa, but didn’t. The news value was practically nil, but the story fed into the current English conception of Israeli wickedness — it confirmed the reader’s sense that he was rooting for (or against) the right side in the Middle East...

What, me McWorry?

It’s obvious from information above and below the radar that Petraeus has been hiding in the background behind his phony laurels for the past year or so, hoping to let his little buddies McChrystal and Ray ‘Desert Ox’ Odierno take the falls for the Bananastans and Iraq. That’s been Petraeus’ standard operating procedure throughout his meteoric career: take charge of a situation, slap a band-aid on whatever troubles exist, let the underlying problems fester, and then bail out in time for the disaster to erupt on his successor’s watch. He played this stratagem three times in Iraq...

Petraeus holds Obama hostage

The American Conservative
by Patrick J. Buchanan

06/28/10

By firing a fighting general, beloved of his troops, Obama just took upon himself full responsibility for the McChrystal Plan. The general is off the hook. As of now, the plan is not succeeding. And given the inability of Kabul to deliver the ‘government in a box’ to Marja, after Marines supposedly de-Talibanized the town, the McChrystal Plan is failing. The Battle of Kandahar has not yet begun, though the June D-Day has come and gone. Should we be in this same bloody stalemate in December, Obama will be blamed for having fired his field commander who devised his battle plan, and was carrying it out, over some stupid insults from staff officers to some counterculture magazine. More critically, Obama just made himself hostage to a savvy general who is said to dream of one day holding Obama’s office...

So Gen. Stanley McChrystal is out and Gen. David Petraeus is back at the helm in Afghanistan. I don’t like hackneyed phrases, but if this isn’t rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, what is it? America’s occupation of Afghanistan has no end in sight. The July 2011 date for the beginning of withdrawal is something that even President Obama doesn’t want to talk about. It is clearer than ever that the date was a crumb thrown to the American people so they wouldn’t grumble when Obama announced the troop buildup last year...

Lesen Sie weiter:

Terror chief defends targeting rebel US cleric

Associated Press

06/30/10

A top counterterrorism official on Wednesday defended the government’s right to target U.S. citizens perceived as terror threats for capture or killing, citing the example of the renegade al-Qaida-linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, would not say whether al-Awlaki is on a U.S. targeting list, but a senior U.S. counterterrorism official has previously confirmed that the cleric is among terror targets sought to be captured or killed...

Oil Well Blowout May Never End

By Washington's Blog

The likelihood of a complete collapse is difficult to assess, in part, engineers and legislators say, because BP hasn't shared enough information to evaluate the situation. But a handful of clues suggest that the company is concerned. On Friday, BP spokesperson Toby Odone acknowledged that the 45-ton stack of the blowout preventer was tilting noticeably, but said the company could not attribute it to down-hole leaks.

Everyone is shocked — shocked! — that the indiscretions of Gen. After all, as I recall, Obama ran on ramping up the war on the Afghan front, and even threatened to invade Pakistan, two campaign promises he has kept. Furthermore, he is committed to prosecuting the war in Afghanistan and now Pakistan on a scale that even the nuttiest neocons never dared suggest, a ‘nation-building’ project that is nothing less than the construction of a US colony, or satrapy, from scratch...
