Top Secret America: A Hidden World, Growing Beyond Control

By Dana Priest and William M. Arkin

The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.

Corporate Media Discover Private Spies

In Other News, No WMD in Iraq

By Jeremy Scahill

Stop the presses and call the government spokespeople back from Martha's Vineyard. The corporate media have discovered that the United States is radically outsourcing national security and sensitive intelligence operations. Cable news channels breathlessly report on the "groundbreaking," "exclusive" Washington Post series.

National Security Inc.: Washington Post Investigation

The Post investigation uncovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America created since 9/11 that is hidden from public view, lacking in thorough oversight and so unwieldy that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

The geek labyrinth

Slate
by Fred Kaplan

07/22/10

The report’s numbers are fairly staggering: 854,000 people have clearances of Top Secret or higher; 1,271 government agencies and 1,931 private companies do superclassified work related to counterterrorism, homeland security, and intelligence in about 10,000 locations nationwide; 33 building complexes for Top Secret intelligence work have been built, or are under construction, since 2001. But the numbers are the least of it, and the critics who focus on them — scoffing that big isn’t always bad and, after all, we might need all those companies and complexes in this dangerous world — miss the point...

Our big-government war on terror

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

07/27/10

Guess what happens when you combine a crisis atmosphere with a gusher of federal funds? You get a dangerous, wealth-gobbling bureaucracy that fails to achieve its ostensible goal, whether that’s better health care, ending drug abuse — or uncovering terrorist threats. That’s the lesson of ‘Top Secret America,’ last week’s high-profile Washington Post series on the post-9/11 ‘Intelligence-Industrial Complex.’ You’d think a classic story of government overreach and incompetence would resonate with conservatives, but their reaction was mostly muted and dismissive.

America: Hooked on war and getting poorer

AlterNet
by Clancy Sigal
07/15/10

Why is nobody talking about the Afghanistan adventure as a cause of our plunging recession? Or at least citing the 30-year-old endless war as a major contributory factor in wasting our money to ‘nation-build’ in the Hindu Kush while our own country falls to pieces on food stamps, foreclosures and child poverty — one in five kids — that would put the world’s poorest nations to shame? Iraq was George Bush’s war. But, as Republican party chairman Michael Steele correctly says, ‘Afghanistan is Obama’s war of choice,’ and a losing proposition. Historically, Bush and Dick Cheney merely toyed with Afghanistan while visiting shock and awe on Iraq. But President Obama is really, really serious about it...

Washington Elites Prefer Shills for Banks and Big Business

David Sirota, AlterNet: "The message to both today's generation and the future generation of citizens who may aspire to work in government is pretty clear: If you are personally/financially connected to private for-profit corporations - even those that helped destroy the economy - that underwrite political campaigns, Washington has no problem with your appointment to a position overseeing those same private corporations."

The Great Decoupling of Corporate Profits From Jobs

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "Second-quarter earnings reports are coming in, and they're making Wall Street smile. Corporate profits are up. And big American companies are sitting on a gigantic pile of money. The 500 largest non-financial firms held almost a trillion dollars in the second quarter, and that money pile is growing larger this quarter. Profits that plummeted in the recession have bounced back. Big businesses have recovered almost 90 percent of what they lost."

Deficit hawks or war hawks?

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

07/16/10

Last week’s TGIF asked if the American people can afford a world-girdling foreign policy more befitting an empire than a republic. Look at it this way: War hawks make poor deficit hawks. Facing a $13 trillion national debt and trillion-dollar-plus annual budget deficits, we can’t afford to be complacent about foreign interventions costing $12 billion a month. It’s not just that the budget numbers are daunting: The very institutions of small-government republicanism are suffocated by the quest for global hegemony...

Deficits of mass destruction

The Nation
by Christopher Hayes

07/15/10

If you’ve been paying attention this past decade, it won’t surprise you to learn that the country’s policy elites are in the midst of a destructive, well-nigh unhinged discussion about the future of the nation. But even by the degraded standards of the Washington establishment, the growing panic over government debt is shocking. First, the facts. Nearly the entire deficit for this year and those projected into the near and medium terms are the result of three things: the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Bush tax cuts and the recession. The solution to our fiscal situation is: end the wars, allow the tax cuts to expire and restore robust growth. Our long-term structural deficits will require us to control healthcare inflation the way countries with single-payer systems do...

Professors as Welfare Queens?

Jesse Lemisch, Truthout: "From Obama on down, the political atmosphere is deeply polluted by the use of 'centrism' as a self-description of what are essentially retrograde right-wing views. Under Obama, the US wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq continue, as do the lies put out about them. Guantanamo goes on. Obama's 'Deficit Commission' warms us up for cuts in Medicare and Social Security. 'The perfect is the enemy of the good,' and, thus, we have health care 'reform' by and for the insurers, with higher premiums and profits, and more evasions of coverage by merchants of death like UnitedHealthCare."

Why this gigantic “intelligence” apparatus? Follow the money

07/20/10

According to retired admiral Dennis C. Blair, formerly the director of national intelligence, after 9/11 ‘the attitude was, if it’s worth doing, it’s probably worth overdoing.’ I submit that this explanation does not cut to the heart of the matter. As it stands, it suggests a sort of mindless desire to pile mountains of money, technology, and personnel on top of an already enormous mountain of money, technology, and personnel for no reason other than the vague notion that more must be better. In my view, national politics does not work in that way...

Global food prices skyrocketing as a result of devastating weather conditions, hedge fund speculation

Russia’s ban on wheat exports following widespread fires in the country sent food prices skyrocketing by 19 per cent in just a single week as fears grow that global volatility in foodstuffs and commodities could lead to a worldwide inflationary timebomb accompanied by widespread food riots.

Congress Green-Lighting Israeli Strikes on Iran

By Jamal Abdi

Republicans in the House of Representatives have introduced a measure that would green-light an Israeli bombing campaign against Iran. The resolution, H.Res. 1553 (in full below), provides explicit support for military strikes against Iran, stating that Congress supports Israel's use of "all means necessary" against Iran "including the use of military force".

Amiri was just a small cog in the Greatest Show on Earth, the $100 billion a year US intelligence community. United States intelligence is a huge and expensive bureaucracy and the information it produces must be consumed even when it does not necessarily make Americans safer. More important than that, it is a product that must have enough bells and whistles to impress Congress, the media, and the White House to keep the money flowing...

What is important to understand about this campaign is that the aim of Gerecht and of the right-wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu is to support an attack by Israel so that the United States can be drawn into direct, full-scale war with Iran."

Missouri vote puts health care back in crosshairs

Las Vegas Review-Journal

08/04/10

Missouri voters’ overwhelming opposition to requiring nearly all Americans to buy health insurance puts one of the least popular parts of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law back in the political crosshairs. Even if the vote sets no legally binding precedent, it will help mobilize foes of Obama’s agenda in the fall midterm elections, and that could make a difference in some states with close congressional races that could decide the balance of power in Washington...

Double Dividend: Make Money by Saving Nature

George Lakoff, Truthout: "Saving nature is the central issue. Carbon fuels destroy nature. The Gulf Death Gusher is the most visible sign. But signs are everywhere. The use of carbon fuels has been destroying nature. Our job now is to save it."

GOP: No More Help for Jobless, but Rich Must Keep Tax Cuts

David Lightman, McClatchy Newspapers: "Republicans almost unanimously oppose spending $33.9 billion for extended unemployment benefits for some 2.5 million people who've lost them, because they say it would increase federal budget deficits. At the same time, they're pushing a permanent extension of Bush administration tax cuts, especially for the wealthy, which could increase federal budget deficits by trillions of dollars over the next 10 years."

Obviously the conservative movement is intoxicated with hubris right now. Part of this hubris is their belief that the American people are truly and deeply on their side and that the last two elections were either a fluke or the product of a GOP that was too centrist. It’s a tactical radicalism, a belief that ideological purity carries no electoral cost whatsoever. Right-wing tactical radicalism has an old pedigree, and of course there is an equivalent (though less influential) tactical radicalism on the left-wing of the Democratic Party. Tactical radicalism is not the same thing as ideological radicalism. Tactical radicals are a subset of ideological radicals; some ideological radicals have clear-eyed of the pragmatic steps needed to advance their goals incrementally...

President Obama hailed the 60 U.S. senators who voted to extend federal unemployment benefits Tuesday — without paying for the $34 billion tab — for standing on the side of ‘working families.’ The measure, which had been blocked by Republicans, would distribute unemployment benefits to some 2.5 million recipients who have been out of work for 26 to 99 weeks. GOP Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine voted in favor of the measure. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., joined the GOP filibuster. The House is expected to pass the measure so that Obama can sign it. No doubt Americans who have seen their benefits run out are relieved that their unemployment checks will resume — and be paid retroactively...

The return of Agent Orange

CounterPunch
by Firmin DeBrabander

07/15/10

For years critics ominously warned that, as is the nature of ‘nature,’ weeds would eventually evolve to withstand Roundup. Monsanto brushed aside such concerns, saying it would be ages before anyone had to worry about something like that. The glory days lasted about a decade. The superweeds evolved faster than anyone imagined — and with a vengeance. Farmers accustomed to drenching their fields with Roundup are now battling a monster breed of pigweed that, the New York Times reports, ‘can grow three inches a day and reach seven feet or more … so sturdy that it can damage harvesting equipment. Nature has issued quite a challenge to our ‘weed solution.’ The chemical industry has decided to respond in turn with Agent Orange. To be precise, Dow Chemical is working on seeds that are resistant to 24-D, a component of Agent Orange … presumably because it intends on spraying farmland with wartime defoliant. This is alarming on a number of fronts. But let’s be clear on one thing at the outset: we don’t necessarily need Agent Orange to deal with weeds. The Amish don’t. Never have. Superweeds — like superbugs (or superbacteria) emerging in concentrated chicken farms — are the product of industrial agriculture, which aims to squeeze as much as possible from the land, and has selected monoculture as the optimal means of doing so...

Financial Reform Bill Brings Little Change to Wall Street

The New Finance Bill: A Mountain of Legislative Paper, a Molehill of Reform

Robert Reich: "Thursday, the President pronounced that 'because of this [financial reform] bill the American people will never again be asked to foot the bill for Wall Street's mistakes.' As if to prove him wrong, Goldman Sachs simultaneously announced it had struck a deal with federal prosecutors to pay $550 million to settle federal claims it misled investors, a sum representing a mere 15 days profit for the firm based on its 2009 earnings."

Obama’s latest monstrosity

Competitive Enterprise Institute
by John Berlau

07/21/10

The 2,315 page Dodd-Frank financial regulation bill that President Obama will sign today should not be called ‘financial reform.’ Instead the bill, which passed the Senate 60-39 last week when Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown joined Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to grant cloture, should be called what for what it is: pages and pages of massively costly, counterproductive and possibly unconstitutional mandates on nearly every type of business except for those government-sponsored enterprises at the root of the crisis. And while the bill claims to crack down on excesses on Wall Street, its harshest impact will likely be on Main Street businesses that had nothing to do with the meltdown...

According to a recent Washington Post poll, a startling 58% have only some or no faith that he will make the right decisions about the country’s future. Congressional Democrats fare worse. Republicans would be salivating, only folks overwhelmingly don’t want to rehire them either. A staggering 72% have little or no trust in congressional Republicans on the country’s future. Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah and Rep. Bob Inglis of South Carolina were bounced in their Republican primaries in large part because they voted for the Wall Street bailout. It is expected that the list of ‘TARP martyrs’ will become much larger this November as voters have additional opportunities to express their unhappiness about the massive transfer of wealth from taxpayers to poorly run but politically connected financial institutions. Beltway insiders and members of the political establishment are mourning these developments, asserting that the TARP martyrs are noble and courageous officials who did the right thing despite the risk to their careers. The obvious implication is that ordinary voters are a bunch of yokels who did not understand the steps that were needed to rescue the financial system and the economy from collapse...

Turning us into a nation full of suspects

Spiked
by Tim Black

07/14//10

‘A man’s home is his castle.’ Rarely has this 400-year-old quipped defence against the arbitrary exercise of state power seemed quite as quaint as it does today. Because whatever else a man’s home is, whatever else he feels his private sphere to be, it is certainly not impermeable. In fact, due to a whole raft of legislation over the past 10 years, our private existence has never been quite so transparent. The state, should it so wish, can read our emails, can check which websites we visit, can watch us take our dogs for walks, can follow us on our way to work … in fact, the possibilities for state surveillance are endless. And the chief reason for this is a spectacularly snide piece of legislation called the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA)...

US home foreclosures reach record high in second quarter

The number of U.S. homes taken back by banks through foreclosure hit a record high in the second quarter, even as lenders delayed more homes from entering the process through short sales and loan modification efforts, according to data to be released Thursday. This growing supply of lender-owned properties could set back the nation’s housing recovery but probably won’t sink it completely if the nation’s employment situation doesn’t deteriorate further and the economy begins to pick up steam, experts said. Sales of homes have faltered nationally in recent months with the expiration of government tax incentives for buyers...

I have a modest ten-part proposal for the federal government, although some people undoubtedly will consider it radical. 1. Immediately vacate Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. government has had 8-9 years to do as much killing, injuring, maiming, and destroying as it wants in those two countries. Time’s up. Enough is enough...

It’s Obama’s war, all right

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

07/13/10

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele caught grief recently for suggesting the war was doomed to fail. Steele, who has offended everyone from pro-lifers to Rush Limbaugh fans, truly has the gift of gaffe. But he wasn’t wrong to call Afghanistan a ‘war of Obama’s choosing.’ A recent National Journal graphic shows that under the president’s Afghan ’surge,’ OEF deployments passed Iraq troop levels in ‘a strategic pivot point’ earlier this year. Obama, Steele suggested, had bought into the Democratic ’script’ that has prevailed since the 2004 Kerry campaign: Iraq’s a distraction — ‘the battle should really be in Afghanistan.’ Obama’s escalation of that battle raises young John Kerry’s question about Vietnam: How do you ask someone ‘to be the last man to die for a mistake?’

India's Dongria Kondh Sacred Mountain and Tribal Way of Life Threatened by Unwanted British Vedanta Mining

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!

By Forests.org Forest Protection Portal http://forests.org/ a project of Ecological Internet July 13, 2010

Vedanta Resources, a British mining company, is set to destroy the forests, wildlife and way of life of the Dongria Kondh people. The Dongria Kondh have been struggling with all their might to protect their mountain but are being overpowered by the financial and political might of this multi-billion dollar company. They have been protesting locally for years, and have appealed for international support for their campaign to keep their sacred Niyamgiri Mountain ecologically and culturally intact.

TAKE ACTION HERE NOW: http://forests.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=india_mine

The Dongria Kondh are an indigenous tribe who have lived since time immemorial around the mountain Niyamgiri in the Indian state of Orissa. Because they revere this mountain as their god, it has not thus far suffered the deforestation and degradation experienced by similar areas in that part of the world but contains an elephant reserve with Sambar, Leopard, Tiger, Barking Deer, various species of birds and other endangered species of wildlife. However now Vedanta Resources, a British mining company, is set to destroy the forests, wildlife and way of life of the Dongria Kondh people. These local peoples have been vociferously and bravely protesting for years.

Many groups from around the world have been campaigning to persuade Vedanta's shareholders and financiers to distance themselves from the company. A group of international NGO's wrote to Vedanta's bankers in April this year asking them to dissociate themselves from the company. None of the banks have done so, so now it’s time to name and shame them, time for people from all around the world to send emails expressing our disgust that they continue bankroll this disgraceful project. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can send emails to people who could, if they wished, prevent this ecological destruction and injustice from taking place. Please share this action alert with your friends and ask them to do the same.

How Brokers Became Bookies: The Insidious Transformation of Markets Into Casinos

Ellen Brown, Truthout: "Ever since December 2008, the Federal Reserve has held short-term interest rates near zero. This was not only to try to stimulate the housing and credit markets, but also to allow the federal government to increase its debt levels without increasing the interest tab picked up by the taxpayers. The total public US debt increased by nearly 50 percent from 2006 to the end of 2009 (from about $8.5 trillion to $12.3 trillion), but the interest bill on the debt actually dropped (from $406 billion to $383 billion), because of this reduction in interest rates."

If you’ve been reading Mother Jones lately, you’ve heard about BP’s stranglehold on media access in the Gulf, which has included preventing reporters from visting oil-soaked public beaches and barring its spill cleanup workers from talking to the press. Now, one of BP’s ex-media enforcers is speaking out. Former BP contractor Adam Dillon went public last Friday, telling a local news station in New Orleans that he was fed up with BP’s handling of the spill response, not least of all its information clampdown. In an interview with Mother Jones this week, Dillon, who claims he was fired for raising concerns about the cleanup with his bosses, elaborated on his experiences in the Gulf and vented his frustrations with BP...

First, do no harm

The New Republic
by David Rieff

07/12/10

How can anti-interventionists pay so little heed to the views of the victims? It is a fair question. I would respond first as an American: I do not want my country to be the world’s policeman, even in the most humane sense of that word. It seems to me that assuming this role has been a disaster for the United States. As W. H. Seward said in his eulogy to John Quincy Adams, ‘democracies are prone to war, and war consumes them.’ For make no mistake, these military interventions on humanitarian or human rights grounds are wars, not armed philanthropy. Sorry, the military-industrial complex is no myth...

Inflating war

The American Conservative
by Thomas DiLorenzo

Government can finance war (and everything else) by only three methods: taxes, debt, and the printing of money. Taxes are the most visible and painful, followed by debt finance, which crowds out private borrowing, drives up interest rates, and imposes the double burden of principal and interest. Money creation, on the other hand, makes war seem costless to the average citizen. But of course there is no such thing as a free lunch. As a general rule, the longer a war lasts, the more centrally planned and government-controlled the entire economy becomes. And it remains so to some degree after the war has ended. War is the health of the state, as Randolph Bourne famously declared, and the growth of the state means a decline in liberty and prosperity... (for publication 08/01/10)

April 2010 festgehalten: http://www.businessinsider.com/44-million-americans-are-now-squatters-2010-4

Funding corruption and waste in Afghanistan

Freedom's Phoenix

07/12/10

Last week, GOP chairman Michael Steele came under fire for daring to say what a lot of Americans already know — that our involvement in Afghanistan is an ill-advised quagmire with no end in sight. After nearly 10 years and approaching $1 trillion spent, the conflict is going nowhere because there is nowhere for it to go. After all, if victory is never really defined, defeat is inevitable. With our economy at home in serious trouble, this wasteful occupation is something we clearly cannot afford. Each soldier costs us $1 million per year, and yet most in Washington are only considering how many more soldiers to send...

Who owns General Petraeus?

AntiWar.Com

07/29/10

Petraeus’ apparent close relationship with the neoconservatives and the Israel Lobby is a matter of concern, particularly if he does aspire to be president. Some have plausibly identified him as the neocon candidate for 2012 though others note appreciatively that he initiated a long overdue national debate with his Senate testimony in March 2010, observing as he did that the failure to achieve peace in Israel-Palestine has endangered United States soldiers in the region. To be sure, Petraeus quickly did damage control for the statement in the Senate, helping in the orchestration of an article that described him as a friend to Israel who did not view the conflict with the Palestinians as a matter of great concern. In May 2010 Petraeus received the Irving Kristol award from the American Enterprise Institute, indicating clearly that the Israel Lobby and the neocon establishment regard him as a favorite son...

Toxic Dispersants Near Gulf Harm Humans and Wildlife

Dahr Jamail and Erika Blumenfeld, Truthout: "My eyes are burning as I type this. We've just returned from spending the day down in Barataria, located about an hour's drive south of New Orleans. The community of fishermen is swimming in oil. Within minutes of arriving, our eyes begin to burn and we begin to feel dizzy from airborne chemicals from the oil and dispersant."

The long, slow flight from the US dollar

The Libertarian Standard
by Ryan McMaken

(07/09/10

The new competition over reserve currency is interesting for more than its economics since it is an important political issue. The nation that can build up its own currency as a reserve currency will expand its ability to inflate and incur debt with less fear of inflation. The US has benefited from this situation for decades. As the Fed inflates to finance deficit spending and to “stimulate” consumer spending, dollars are eventually absorbed by foreign central banks, put in reserves and out of circulation. The United States has managed to stave off the effects of reckless money printing for decades thanks to the willingness of foreign investors and central banks to sit on dollars as a store of value. Now the demand for the dollar is fading away slowly...

More power for the Fed

Campaign for Liberty
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

07/09/10

Any legitimate objections to the audit proposal were addressed in the language of the motion to recommit. Thus, it is clear that the real reasons for opposing it are unstated and indefensible. The real reasons are that politicians like to spend money far exceeding income and it is convenient to have an enabler of this in the Federal Reserve. The easier it is for the Fed to create money, hidden from public view and accountability, the easier it is for politicians to spend that money and make sure their friends and interests are taken care of through shady political processes. The broader reasons for supporting this entire financial regulatory reform bill are just as sinister...

Can America afford an empire?

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

07/09/10

[I]f the deficit is to be eliminated it will have to be through dramatic budget cutting. In the current fiscal year the federal government is planning to spend $3.55 trillion. Among the largest categories of spending are Social Security (19.63 percent); unemployment/welfare/other ‘mandatory’ spending (16.13 percent); Medicare (12.79 percent); Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (8.19 percent); and interest on the national debt (4.63 percent). Of course I’ve left out a category, but it’s one often ignored by deficit hawks: the Department of Defense...

US debt commission leaders paint gloomy picture

Yahoo! News

07/11/10

The heads of President Barack Obama’s national debt commission painted a gloomy picture Sunday as the United States struggles to get its spending under control. Republican Alan Simpson and Democrat Erskine Bowles told a meeting of the National Governors Association that everything needs to be considered — including curtailing popular tax breaks, such as the home mortgage deduction, and instituting a financial trigger mechanism for gaining Medicare coverage. The nation’s total federal debt next year is expected to exceed $14 trillion — about $47,000 for every U.S. resident...

The worst of times, the best of times

CounterPunch
by Alexander Cockburn

07/11/10

It’s the worst of times. America is plunging back into Depression. Only one out of every two Americans of working age has a job. Forty years ago that would have been okay. Dad went to the factory. Mom stayed at home to mind the kids. These days, just to keep the show on the road, mom and pop both work and the kids get daycare. … And yet … if not the best of times, you can hardly say that America is broke. It’s not. As Carl Ginsburg remarked on this site last week, ‘America is awash in cash. This is a very, very rich country with piles and piles of cash. Private US accounts today contain approximately $10 trillion in cash and liquid assets.’ … The problem is that the banks don’t want to put money out, because they think ordinary Americans are too broke to pay it back. Ordinary Americans agree. They’ve carried America forward through the past decade on the backs of their credit cards and they can’t totter another step. They’re out of juice...
