Wars don’t make heroes

Campaign For Liberty
by William Astore and Tom Engelhardt

07/26/10

Consider a strange aspect of our wars since October 2001: they have yet to establish a bona fide American hero, a national household name. Two were actually ‘nominated’ early by the Bush administration — Jessica Lynch, a 19-year-old private and clerk captured by the Iraqis in the early days of the American invasion and later ‘rescued’ by Army Rangers and Navy Seals, and Pat Tillman, the former NFL safety who volunteered for service in the Army Rangers eight months after 9/11 and died under ‘enemy’ gunfire in Afghanistan. Both stories were later revealed to be put-up jobs, pure Bush-era propaganda and deceit...

Government has run amok since 9/11

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Sheldon Richman

07/27/10

Those who understand the exploitative nature of big government suspected that the U.S. response to the 9/11 attacks had little to do with the security of the American people and much to do with power and money. Still, the magnitude of the scam, as revealed by the Washington Post last week, is astonishing. Naturally, the politicians justify the growth in intelligence operations on national security grounds. To make sure such attacks never happen again, they said, new powers, agencies, personnel, and facilities were imperative...

Yoo, Bybee, and the Taliban prisoner

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

07/26/10

I wonder what torture-memo attorneys John Yoo and Jay Bybee are thinking regarding the report of a U.S. sailor who was apparently taken captive by the Taliban yesterday. Time will tell whether the sailor who was killed with him was actually the lucky one. Would the Taliban torture the guy? It wouldn’t surprise anyone, but one thing is certain: the U.S. government unfortunately has no moral standing whatsoever to demand proper treatment of the soldier, given its own position and its own track record regarding torture and abuse...

BP Response Workers Report Low Morale, Lack of Pay, Sickness

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "BP oil disaster response workers are reporting endemic problems, such as not being paid on time, low morale, rampant sickness, equipment failures and being lied to regularly. 'Yesterday was a catastrophe,' one worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Truthout, 'People are waiting 2-3 hours for their paychecks to be brought to them and I know for a fact three people that didn't get paid and no reason was given.'"

Dahr Jamail, Dahr Jamial's Dispatches: "Not long ago we strolled along a beautiful white-sand beach in Orange Beach, Alabama, taking photos of freshly washed ashore black and brown tar balls. Leakistan: The new insurgency

The New Republic
by Andrew J. Bacevich

07/25/10

The leaks are unlikely to affect the course of events on the ground. However, they may well affect the debate over the war here at home. In that regard, the effect is likely to be pernicious, intensifying the already existing inclination to focus on peripheral matters while ignoring vastly more important ones. For months on end, Washington has fixated on this question: what, oh what, are we to do about Afghanistan? Implicit in the question are at least two assumptions: first, that something must be done; and, second, that if the United States and its allies can just devise the right approach (or assign the right general), then surely something can be done. Both assumptions are highly dubious. To indulge them is to avoid the question that should rightly claim Washington’s attention: What exactly is the point of the Afghanistan war?

The WikiLeaks war logs change everything

Salon
by Dan Gillmor

07/26/10

Whatever our keepers of intelligence secrets do know, and whatever abuses they’ve done to our civil liberties to learn them, they must feel less sure today about keeping it all contained. When that many people have access to information, however compartmentalized their bosses may think they’ve made the system, some of it will get out, which leads to something else we should worry about. … The WikiLeaks war diary will absolutely spur our powerful institutions to look for increasingly draconian ways to clamp down on how we share information. What WikiLeaks represents is what governments and corporations fear: a threat to their cultures of secrecy and dominance in their domains...

WikiLeaks: Time to Celebrate, Time to Mourn

Jeff Cohen, Truthout: "It's a big win for Internet-based, indie media that WikiLeaks.org posted its 'Afghan War Diary,' based on 90,000 leaked US military records detailing a failing war in which US and allied forces have repeatedly killed innocent civilians. This on-the-ground material is vaster than the Daniel Ellsberg-leaked Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War and was much faster in reaching the public."

New focus: targeted killings of Taliban

Columbus Dispatch

08/01/10

When President Barack Obama announced his new war plan for Afghanistan last year, the centerpiece of the strategy — and a big part of the rationale for sending 30,000 additional troops — was to safeguard the Afghan people, provide them with a competent government and win their allegiance. Eight months later, that counterinsurgency strategy has shown little success, as demonstrated by the flagging military and civilian operations in Marja and Kandahar and the spread of Taliban influence in other areas of the country...

US Corporate Media Downplays Pentagon's Special Commando Assassination Unit

Massenhaft falsche Hartz IV-Bescheide

Wer sich nicht wehrt, lebt verkehrt

26. Juli 2010

Weiter lesen:

Leaked documents present bleak view of Afghan war

Wall Street Journal

07/25/10

Thousands of secret military documents were released Sunday by a Web-based organization, a gigantic leak of classified information that appeared to present a bleak view of Afghanistan war and could have a profound impact on the public perception of the conflict. The release of the documents, which were obtained and made public by the website WikiLeaks, evoked the Pentagon Papers, the secret history of the Vietnam War, which when published contradicted the public narrative of that war and played a role in turning public opinion against it...

They said the huge cache of classified documents — including 250,000 diplomatic messages passed from US embassies around the world to Washington — was a fantasy, ‘boasting’ by Pfc. Bradley Manning, the intelligence analyst who gave Wikileaks that video of US soldiers laughing and shouting ‘good shot!’ as they mowed down Iraqi civilians. The ‘hi tech’ media, especially Wired magazine, did everything they could do discredit and smear him, including spreading rumors about his alleged sexuality. Now, with the release of over 91,000 internal US government communications, intelligence analyses and incident reports via Wikileaks, the motive behind the determined effort to smear Manning and shut down Wikileaks is all too apparent...

On the coming fall of the American empire

Campaign For Liberty
by Daniel McCarthy

07/23/10

Bruce Fein’s American Empire: Before the Fall is not for the faint of heart. ‘You, your family, your friends, your professional colleagues, and your elected and appointed officials in the nation’s highest circles will fiercely resist the truths this book expounds,’ the author warns. He’s not kidding. Only the most well informed constitutionalist will fail to be surprised by this book — and even that reader will come away from American Empire with a clearer understanding of the dangers facing our republic...

Americans are fighting the wrong war. The greatest threat to national security is not Islamic extremism. Nor is it a Chinese military buildup, nuclear weapons in Iran or climate change. ‘I think the biggest threat we have to our national security is our debt,’ said Adm. The year America dissolved

CounterPunch
by Paul Craig Roberts

07/26/10

The Roman Empire lasted for centuries. The American one collapsed overnight. Rome’s corruption became the strength of her enemies, and the Western Empire was overrun. America’s collapse occurred when government ceased to represent the people and became the instrument of a private oligarchy. Decisions were made in behalf of short-term profits for the few at the expense of unmanageable liabilities for the many. Overwhelmed by liabilities, the government collapsed...

Fight back against the oligarchy

AlterNet
by US Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)

07/25/10

While the middle class disappears and poverty increases the wealthiest people in our country are not only doing extremely well, they are using their wealth and political power to protect and expand their very privileged status at the expense of everyone else. This upper-crust of extremely wealthy families are hell-bent on destroying the democratic vision of a strong middle-class which has made the United States the envy of the world. In its place they are determined to create an oligarchy in which a small number of families control the economic and political life of our country...

The Great Myth: Counterinsurgency

By Conn Hallinan

The Afghan Taliban have never been a threat to the West, and the idea that fighting the Taliban would reduce the threat of terrorism is "complete rubbish." In any case, the al-Qaeda operatives who pulled off the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon got their training in Hamburg and south Florida, not Tora Bora.

Here Be Dragons: In Bed With the US Army

Ann Jones, TomDispatch: "In the eight years I've reported on Afghanistan, I've 'embedded' regularly with Afghan civilians, especially women. Recently, however, with American troops 'surging' and journalists getting into the swing of the military's counterinsurgency 'strategy' (better known by its acronym, COIN), I decided to get with the program as well. Last June, I filed a request to embed with the U.S. Army."

Lesen Sie weiter:

Shadow Banking Makes A Comeback

Financial system instability is no accident. It's Central Bank policy. As financial institutions discover they can no longer count on organic growth in the real economy to increase profits, (because consumers are too strapped to spend freely) they will rely more heavily on dodgy accounting, bogus ratings, opaque debt-instruments, high-frequency trading and lax lending standards.

WAL-MART TO BEGIN ITEM-LEVEL TAGGING CLOTHING WITH RFID

URGENT ALERT: WAL-MART TO BEGIN ITEM-LEVEL TAGGING CLOTHING WITH RFID YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! PLEASE JOIN US IN OPPOSING WAL-MART'S RFID PLANS

Today the Wall Street Journal broke an enormous story: Wal-Mart, the nation's largest retailer, has declared war on our privacy. The giant retailer has announced it will begin placing item-level RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) tracking tags on clothing sold in its stores.

THIS IS HUGE NEWS. It is the first step to the planned roll-out of the Internet of Things, where global corporations like IBM, Procter & Gamble, and Wal-Mart's technology partner NCR plan to equip every product with a tracking device and use a network of RFID readers to monitor and observe YOU everywhere you go. It is the frightening world detailed in our book "Spychips: How Major Corporations and Government Plan to Track Your Every Move with RFID," and it is finally coming to pass.

Unless we stop it, Wal-Mart's roll-out is scheduled to begin next month.

Here is the Wall Street Journal article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704421304575383213061198090.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTTopStories

And here is a WSJ poll where you can make your views known (today only): http://online.wsj.com/community/groups/question-day-229/topics/do-you-have-privacy-concerns

As you know, RFID is a powerful tracking technology that raises unprecedented privacy concerns. Wal-Mart's plan does more than just threaten our privacy -- it is poised to become a direct threat to our freedom and civil liberties, as I will describe in future emails.

It is imperative that we immediately act to oppose Wal-Mart's RFID rollout. I have placed calls and given Wal-Mart an opportunity to respond, but as of this afternoon, Wal-Mart corporate executives and media representatives have not returned my calls.

In the meantime, we are formulating a response to Wal-Mart's plans that will protect consumers. I will keep you posted on this breaking story.

Wal-Mart plan to use smart tags raises privacy concerns

USA Today

07/29/10

Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) is putting electronic identification tags on men’s clothing like jeans starting Aug. 1 as the world’s largest retailer tries to gain more control of its inventory. But the move is raising eyebrows among privacy experts. The tags work by reflecting a weak radio signal to identify the product. They have long spurred privacy fears as well as visions of stores being able to scan an entire shopping cart of items at one time...

Manufacturing dissent

Center for a Stateless Society
by Kevin Carson

07/22/10

Every society in history, since the rise of class domination (and of states as its instruments), has had a cultural reproduction apparatus. The purpose is to process newborn human beings into the kind of ‘human resources’ a given system needs to continue on a stable basis: People who accept the prevailing system of power as normal, and who dismiss fundamental challenges to the system of power as ‘radical’ or ‘extremist.’ But the Matrix we live in has its own glitches: Internal contradictions built into the system’s own propaganda, which act as stumbling blocks and regularly cause ideological ‘defects’ in the human resources being processed by the system. This is unavoidable. What the system does cannot be reconciled with what it says. What it says this week cannot be reconciled with what it said last week. And sometimes people notice, and put two and two together...

No More Afghanistan War Funding

In the wake of 90,000 leaked documents finally exposing the truth of how completely misguided the occupation of Afghanistan is, and how badly it's really going, the New York Times is reporting that

"In Congress, House leaders were rushing to hold a vote on a critical war-financing bill as early as Tuesday, fearing that the disclosures could stoke Democratic opposition to the measure."

Stop The Afghanistan War Funding Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum1053.php

The truth WOULD tend to put a crimp in continuing hideously bad policy, so of course they want to rush to extend the bad policy even more, before even more truth comes out. Well, we the people have our own urgent message for Congress. Stop it. Stop it cold. Stop it now. Or don't count on being in office after the next election.

If there were a law requiring truth in political advertising, all those politicians shouting, "Support our troops" would be shouting "Support our war profiteers" instead. The ongoing occupation of Afghanistan is not the biggest gift to those recruiting terrorists to attack Americans all over the world. No, Iraq is the biggest gift in that regard, but Afghanistan is a close second.

It's over. It's beyond redemption. The only justification for going into Afghanistan in the first place was to get Osama bin Laden. They failed to do that. That means the mission was a TOTAL failure. It was a lost cause 9 years and a trillion dollars ago. And parking hundreds of thousands of our troops there for a hundred years, like ducks in an IED shooting gallery, will not change that reality.

We have generated so much hatred against America after a decade of collateral genocide in the Middle East, that if Osama bin Laden was the starting center of the Karachi Jihadists basketball team, nobody would breathe a word of it for a thousand miles. That's just how bad it is.

So pick up a 25 pack of the "Corporations Are Not The People" bumper stickers for a modest donation if you have not done so already, because the war-making corporations are just pursuing their own profit at the expense of the good foreign policy interest of the American people in all this. Any donation you make is what makes it possible for us to send a free sticker to anyone who cannot make a donation right now. But we still need your energy to distribute the bulk packs as widely as possible.

Today, because of stagnating wages and higher costs for basic necessities, the average two-wage-earner family has less disposable income than a one-wage-earner family did a generation ago. Obama's Afghan War in Perspective

Practically everyone now understands that the war in Afghanistan is going very badly. This is not because the Taliban and other "insurgent" forces are strong and their foreign foes weak. It is because of the Afghans' indomitable spirit of independence that is only intensified by each civilian death due to house raids or bombs.

Hillary Stemple, JURIST: "A lawsuit was filed Tuesday against BP in a Louisiana state court alleging that the company's negligent actions led to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and that BP was also negligent in its handling of the cleanup of the oil spill. The plaintiffs contend that BP assumed responsibility for the health and safety of the local cleanup workers hired by the company but failed to provide them with adequate training, protective equipment, decontamination equipment and instructions to help them conduct the cleanup in a safe manner. Plaintiff John Wunstell, a former shrimper, alleges that he was hospitalized after being exposed to the chemical dispersants used to clean the oil, and that he is now at a greater risk of developing lung and esophageal cancer due to his exposure to the chemicals. Plaintiffs also contend that they were required to use their own boats to conduct cleanup efforts and that the boats are now damaged, threatening their future ability to earn a living through commercial fishing."

Fehlzeiten: Krankenstand in Deutschland steigt sprunghaft an

Volksabstimmung in Hamburg: Eine schwere Niederlage !

The Origins of Habeas Corpus

Stephen F. Rohde, The Daily Journal: "As U.S. courts grapple with the right of Guantanamo detainees to seek release through habeas corpus, understanding the history and the purpose of the Great Writ seems more important than ever. Why should foreigners, who are not citizens of the United States, held outside the United States, captured in the War on Terror but not charged or convicted of any crimes, have the right to go into a U.S. federal court to challenge their detention?"

In Abu Zubaydah's Case, Court Relies on Propaganda and Lies

Andy Worthington, Truthout: "In the history of the 'War on Terror,' few stories are as disturbing as that of Abu Zubaydah. Seized in Pakistan in March 2002, Zubaydah was initially regarded as a 'high-value detainee' of such significance that the Bush administration conceived its torture program specifically for use on him. But the case against him has steadily unraveled over the years, as officials - first in the Bush administration, and then under President Obama - have conceded that his significance was monstrously overstated, and that he was not a member of al-Qaeda, was not involved in planning any international terrorist attacks, and had no advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks."

"Our American Heroes": Why It's Wrong to Equate Military Service With Heroism

William J. Astore, TomDispatch.com: "When I was a kid in the 1970s, I loved reading accounts of American heroism from World War II. I remember being riveted by a book about the staunch Marine defenders of Wake Island and inspired by John F. Kennedy's exploits saving the sailors he commanded on PT-109. Closer to home, I had an uncle - like so many vets of that war, relatively silent on his own experiences - who had been at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941, and then fought them in a brutal campaign on Guadalcanal, where he earned a Bronze Star. Such men seemed like heroes to me, so it came as something of a shock when, in 1980, I first heard Yoda's summary of war in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker, if you remember, tells the wizened Jedi master that he seeks 'a great warrior.' 'Wars not make one great,' Yoda replies."

Most Americans do not remember what a horror the polio epidemic was upon America. In the early 50s, over 33,000 Americans fell crippled or died slow, terrible deaths from polio each year. It was a virus spread casually that infected the lining of the intestines, then the blood stream, and finally the nervous system where it destroyed the victim’s brain stem. The search for a polio vaccine became a national scientific effort supported by very powerful political forces. As a virus, it did not respond to antibiotics as bacteria do, so a vaccine was needed to stop the crippling and killing......

Senior EPA Analyst: "Government [Agencies] Have Been Sock Puppets for BP In This Cover Up"

Corexit is one of a number of dispersants, that are toxic, that are used to atomize the oil and force it down the water column so that it's invisible to the eye. In this case, these dispersants were used in massive quantities, almost two million gallons so far, to hide the magnitude of the spill and save BP money.

The complexity conundrum

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/21/10

In the wake of 9/11, an entire industry was born, one that grew larger as grandstanding ‘ “tough on terrorism’ politicians threw money at our anti-terrorist efforts. For the War Party, it was a bonanza just begging to be exploited, and they did so on a grand scale. In our recessionary economy, this may be one of the very few growth industries. The second part of the Post series details the commercial aspect of all this, and the key role played by private contractors — who profit, I might add, from the very complexity that threatens to defeat us...

Conveniently, David Stockman — the Reagan administration’s point man in the fight for supply-side economics who proved when it came to deficit issues to be even more conservative than the 40th president — has weighed in on the matter...

Will the US Congress succeed in institutionalizing racism where a monarchy failed?

Hawaii Reporter
by James W. Cox

07/19/10

For a second time in history, the government in power over Hawaii is trying to divide the people living on these small islands by race. The last time was in January 1893 when Queen Liliuokalani permanently adjourned the legislature and tried to implement a new constitution reserving suffrage solely to persons with Hawaiian blood. The result of that attempt was civil action by citizens born in Hawaii who would have been disenfranchised by the revised constitution...

Obama’s war on the Internet

Campaign For Liberty
by Philip Giraldi

07/19/10

The Ministry of Truth was how George Orwell described the mechanism used by government to control information in his seminal novel 1984. A recent trip to Europe has convinced me that the governments of the world have been rocked by the power of the internet and are seeking to gain control of it so that they will have a virtual monopoly on information that the public is able to access. In Italy, Germany, and Britain the anonymous internet that most Americans are still familiar with is slowly being modified. If one goes into an internet cafe it is now legally required in most countries in the European Union to present a government issued form of identification...

Coercion is death

Strike the Root
by B.R. Merrick

07/19/10

All governments exist upon the initiation of coercion. Each government that is or ever was has basically said, ‘We are here to protect you, to watch over you, to provide for you, to coordinate you, to rule over you. You have no choice in the matter. This is for our collective posterity. You are free to disagree and to do so as loudly as you wish, but you will obey.’ Name a single earthly government that does not, in essence, say this. You may find greater financial freedom in Singapore, but you can be whacked with a cane if you cross them...

The Retirement Nightmare: Half of Americans Have Less Than $2,000 Banked for Their Golden Years

Scott Thill, AlterNet: "The days of quietly retiring with a nest egg built up from years of savings from a long career on the verge of disappearing. For tens of millions of Americans, facing rising costs, shrinking incomes and growing debts they already have disappeared."

BP's Scheme to Swindle the "Small People"

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "Gulf Coast fishermen and others with lost income claims against British Petroleum (BP) are outraged by a recent announcement that the $20 billion government-administered claim fund will subtract money they earn by working on the cleanup effort from any future damage claims against BP. This move, according to lawyers in Louisiana working on behalf of Louisiana fishermen and others affected by the BP oil disaster, contradicts an earlier BP statement where the company promised it would do no such thing."

Post-9/11 militarism helps BP, hurts America

AntiWar.Com
by Kelley B. Vlahos

07/20/10

Down on the bayou, reporters and activists have been pulled over and questioned by British Petroleum security guards and local police because they might be ‘terrorists.’ Journalists have been kicked off public property, detained, harassed, and forced to hand over their photographs — and their Social Security numbers. They’ve been prevented from renting boats or flying below 3,000 feet over the coast. They’ve been threatened with arrest. It all sounds pretty In the Heat of the Night, but this goes way beyond the press butting up against powerful interests in the Gulf, or even the government and BP engaging in elaborate CYA message control. Look closer and witness the future. See how they get away with militarizing every law enforcement operation, every domestic emergency response situation, because for years Americans have allowed this creeping militarization to happen. In a post-9/11 world, every problem requires a military solution, and too often in these crises, the people are the problem...

Will Misguided Patriotism Destroy Free Speech?

The right wing’s perversion of patriotism

Christian Science Monitor
by Walter Rodgers

It once was a given that you did not discuss religion or politics in polite company. To this list, I would add ‘patriotism.’ It has become the new secular American religion, so mercurial that we cannot even agree about what it is. It is regrettable that a once healthy American patriotism has morphed into intolerant jingoism. Love of country has been hijacked. It was not always thus. As a boy in New England, just after World War II, I was schooled in patriotism quite unlike what’s out there today. The week before Thanksgiving, public schools taught us the Pilgrims’ vision of religious liberty. On Memorial Day, Cub Scouts marched up to Pine Hill Cemetery and laid flowers on the graves of Civil War veterans, who we learned had fought and died to preserve the Union. In Massachusetts, patriotism had special currency because it earned us an extra holiday that schoolchildren in most other states didn’t have, Patriots’ Day...
