How Taxpayers Are Subsidizing BP's Disaster Through the Pentagon

Nick Turse, Tomdispatch.com: "Residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida are livid with BP in the wake of the massive, never-ending oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico - and Barack Obama says they ought to be. But there's one aspect of the BP story that most of those angry residents of the Gulf states aren't aware of. And the president hasn't had a thing to say about it."

A Green New Deal Now

Joe Conason, Truthout: "If the right-wing chorus insists that the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico is 'Obama's Katrina,' then let us hope the president will make the most of that slogan. The comparison between the utter failure of the Bush administration and the missteps and errors of the Obama White House is fundamentally false. Yet there is nevertheless a crucial parallel to be drawn as the fifth anniversary of the hurricane approaches."

Laura Flanders, GRITtv: "'Oil is a messy business, even when it's legal,' says filmmaker Joe Berlinger, and we've all seen the effects of that business splashed across front pages and television sets over the last month. But the BP disaster isn't the only mess that Big Oil has caused in the last couple of months, to say nothing of the years and decades past."

Cleaning up our politics as we clean up the Gulf

Huffington Post
by Erich Pica

06/17/10

[T]there’s more than one irresponsible company and its apparently callous CEO behind the disaster in the Gulf. There’s the Mineral Management Service’s repeated rubber stamping of dangerous drilling projects without ensuring proper environmental safeguards were in place. And behind that the agency’s infestation with oil industry cash and cronies, which continued to fester under the leadership of President Obama’s Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. … There are the billions in taxpayer handouts that Big Oil and the fossil fuel industry receive each year. And behind that there are the swarms of industry lobbyists choking the halls of Congress and the stacks of polluter cash filling too many politicians’ campaign accounts. Behind all of this, there’s one deep-rooted problem: increasing corporate infiltration and control of our government...

American Chernobyl

Hervé Kempf, Reporterre.net: "An uncontrollable industrial catastrophe, a worm-eaten system controlled by a rigid nomenklatura, a dynamic leader who wants to change things: doesn't that remind you of something? Yes, of course: Chernobyl, the Soviet Communist Party, Gorbachev."

The Truth About Chernobyl

Reading the long, detailed and carefully referenced account of the harm caused by the Chernobyl explosion is a very sobering experience. It is in stark contrast to the summary of the report of the Chernobyl Forum. The complacent IAEA reports are in stark contrast to what is being observed by people on the ground. Doctors and other medical health workers in the former Soviet Union and other countries are reporting far more deaths and radiation-related illnesses than the official figures show. Yablokov and his colleagues have made vast quantities of evidence available to those us who cannot read Slavic languages; there is now even less excuse for ignoring it. For the IAEA to persist in claiming that no more than a few thousand people were killed or injured as a result of Chernobyl and that those who fear the after effects are mostly suffering from psychological problems is an insult to all those who live in the shadow of the explosion. It is grossly i rresponsible for governments and the nuclear industry to cite those figures as justification for building new nuclear plants all over the world. Were a major incident to occur – and sooner or later one is bound to – the consequences could be catastrophic. We simply cannot afford to go nuclear.

Turkey’s policy toward Iran is worth emulating

AntiWar.Com

06/16/10

Invading on the ground would be the only way to make sure that Iran never obtained a nuclear device. After the fiasco of invading Iraq (and the continuing bog in Afghanistan), invading the larger, more mountainous, more populous, and more zealous Iran likely would be an even bigger nightmare. Even though U.S. policymakers seem to be oblivious, or at least ambivalent, to these stark realities, Iran’s neighbor Turkey is not. The Turks are of the opinion that a more cooperative approach from Iran’s neighbors might make Tehran stop short of making a bomb. In other words, Iran might feel secure enough to halt at developing technology that would enable it to construct a weapon on short notice — much as Japan has already done...

Today, even while loosening its traditional enforcement of militant secularism, it is embarking on the most ambitious diplomatic project in its history, seeking to project power by resolving regional conflicts through dialogue and compromise. President Barack Obama chose Turkey to be the first Muslim country he visited while in office, telling the Grand National Assembly, “Turkey’s greatness lies in your ability to be at the center of things. If we’re apportioning blame for what has encouraged Turkey on its more independent course, we can assign quite a bit to both the Bush and Obama administrations, but that is not the only thing that interests me here. Friedman passes over U.S. mistakes in silence, because this makes it easier to portray Erdogan as the sole culprit responsible for wrecking U.S.-Turkish relations and it helps the misleading ‘the Islamists are coming!’ narrative take hold...

Oh, the humanity

The New Republic
by Bradford Plumer

06/16/10

Take your pick on what’s most infuriating about the oil crisis in the Gulf. There’s the growing evidence that the platform blowout that caused all that crude to erupt out of the ocean floor was entirely preventable and should never have happened in the first place. BP cut corners on safety to save money, and regulators barely seemed to care. And now no one has any real clue how to contain the spill — we just have to watch helplessly as the ever-expanding oil slick poisons fisheries and kills off marshlands and coral reefs. What’s especially unnerving, though, is that the recklessness that helped bring about the spill, and the political reaction that followed, seem to indicate a larger inability to prevent and cope with other large-scale ecological catastrophes — particularly climate change...

And the gods laughed

The Power of Narrative
by Arthur Silber

06/16/10

Obama and the ruling class now can barely stir themselves even to offer a convincing appearance of genuine concern for the huddled, oil-slicked masses. And honestly, why should they? Whatcha gonna do, baby? Most Americans sleepwalk through their days. To the extent they’re awake, more and more they struggle merely for survival. That doesn’t leave time for other activities. One notable exception to this somnolence can and will be made operational from time to time: many Americans will enthusiastically support another campaign of destruction against largely defenseless, usually much poorer (and usually darker-skinned) ‘Others,’ especially when they’re five or eight thousand miles away (unless they’re threatening the inviolable sanctity of our ‘borders’ here at home)...

The men on Elmer’s Island don’t wear respirators since BP and OSHA have thrown precaution to the wind and deemed them unnecessary. But the only type of air-monitoring equipment Elmer’s ever seen on the island are little multigas meters that are not up to the job: They’re designed for indoor use, clog easily, and only measure limited types of pollutants. And despite the known dangers of dispersants and the toxic chemicals in crude (I can attest that contact with the stuff washing up on the beach can burn), workers aren’t even wearing protective Tyvek suits anymore. Of course, there are medics on hand to treat anyone who gets hurt or sick. Unfortunately, any worker who asks for a medic’s help is automatically drug tested, which, for some, can be a powerful incentive to not report injuries. (Not that keeping a cleanup job necessarily equals getting paid: Elmer says the contractors continue to lose workers’ paychecks, a problem he told me about the last time we talked and that has since been confirmed by the local papers.)...

Trillion-dollar war

The Nation Blog
by Robert Dreyfuss

06/15/10

Various estimates have suggested that the war in Afghanistan might cost the United States a trillion dollars. Now we find out that it’s worth it: Afghanistan has a trillion dollars worth of mineral wealth under its soil. The cartoon in the Washington Post, by Tom Toles, says it all. In front of a cavernous mine opening labeled ‘Afghan Minerals,’ a turban-wearing Afghan is shouting ‘Eureka!’ What he’s excited about is not so much that Afghanistan is alleged to have more than $1 trillion is mineral wealth under its war-torn land, but that there’s now a reason for the war itself. As Toles’ caption says: ‘Reason for U.S. Involvement Discovered.’ That’s funny. Toles is joking, sort of...

Jon Stewart on Obama’s executive power record

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

06/16/10

When ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero last week addressed the progressive conference America’s Future Now, he began by saying: ‘I’m going to start provocatively … I’m disgusted with this president.’ Last night, after Obama’s Oval Office speech, Jon Stewart began his show with an 8-minute monologue on Obama’s executive power and civil liberties record which, in essence, provided just some of the reasons why Romero’s strong condemnation is so justified. None of this will be remotely new to any readers here, but it’s still nice to see its being distilled so clearly by a voice which even the most hardened Obama loyalists have decided is a credible and trustworthy one (at least when he’s mocking Sarah Palin and exposing Fox News; we’ll see what reaction this provokes from them, if any)...

The Supreme Court today denied a petition of review from Maher Arar, the Canadian and Syrian citizen who was abducted by the U.S. Government at a stopover at JFK Airport when returning to Canada in 2002, held incommunicado for two weeks, and then rendered to Syria, where he spent the next 10 months being tortured, even though — as everyone acknowledges — he was guilty of absolutely nothing. Arar sued the U.S. Government for what was done to him, and last November, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal of his lawsuit on the ground that courts have no right to interfere in these decisions of the Executive Branch. That was the decision which the U.S. Supreme Court let stand today, ending Arar’s attempt to be compensated for what was done to him.

This week the Supreme Court denied, without comment, the appeal of Maher Arar, a dual citizen of Canada and Syria who was arrested in transit through JFK airport in 2002, then shipped off to Syria and tortured for 10 months. Arar’s abuse allegedly included repeated beatings with electrical cables and confinement in a cell the size of a grave. When they realized they had the wrong guy — the really, totally, and utterly innocent guy — Arar was released without charges. He was then completely exonerated of any link to terror by the Canadian government, which impaneled a commission to investigate the incident, issued a 1,000-plus-page report on the matter, held its own intelligence forces responsible for their role in the screw-up, then apologized and paid Arar $9.8 million. Whereas the U.S. government — as Glenn Greenwald observes — has never apologized, never acknowledged any wrongdoing, never held anyone responsible, and, on President Barack Obama’s watch, has only redoubled its efforts to prevent Arar from having even a single day in court...

The Arar Case: Wrong and Unapologetic

William Fisher, Truthout: "So, where was Barack Obama when contrition was being handed out? What does he/we have to be contrite about? Well, just this: Back in 2002, a young computer engineer was passing through New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on his way back to his home in Canada. But he never made it. Instead, he was 'rendered' by US authorities to a Syrian prison, where, for the next ten plus months, he was held without charge and without family notification."

30. Juni 2010 Caren Lay

Another look at Enron

The response from journalists and politicians across the country was unanimous: Enron was a fraudulent entity and a number of executives and employees got what they deserved by going to prison. However, I have been among the critics not only of the verdicts, but also of the government’s conduct throughout this sorry affair. Thus I am part of a larger public effort to tell people there is another side to the story. Before going further, however, let me say that Enron’s demise should not have been a surprise, as it was a product of the Federal Reserve’s late 1990s boom. Alan Greenspan’s easy-credit regime permitted Enron and other firms to boost their stock prices to levels well above where the fundamentals said they should have been...

Our military commanders in Afghanistan talk incessantly about the need to ’shape’ the political context in a given area before beginning activities with a significant military component — but if their own research is correct, our chances of ’shaping’ Kandahar any time soon range from slim to none. And if we can’t prevail in Kandahar, then we’re stuck with the Taliban as a long-term military presence and political force in Afghanistan...

For the Wall Street reform package currently making its way through Congress to work, it has to accomplish two broad goals: It must take a huge bite out of banking profits and end the too-big-to-fail oligopoly that encourages megabanks to take megarisks and stick taxpayers with the tab. Neither of these goals can be accomplished without taking on derivatives - the wild, unregulated market that brought down AIG. Three wars uncompleted, the price unpaid

CounterPunch
by Vijay Prashad

06/13/10

On May 30, at 10:06am, the United States exchequer turned over its trillionth dollar to the U. S. armed forces for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A trillion dollars is a lot of money. As my friends at the National Priorities Project put it, if I made a $1 million a year, it would take me a million years to earn a trillion dollars. The U. S. government expended the same amount in nine years, fighting two wars. So what did our trillion tax dollars buy?

If I had my druthers, the never-ending conflict between Israel and Palestine would be but a small news brief in American newspapers. But since we police the world, we must always monitor our global police scanner, where not only Israel’s conflicts, but those of North and South Korea, the nation of Georgia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and pretty much everywhere else is the United States’ business because we insist on making it so...

In America, dissent and exposing ugly truths a crime

Freedom's Phoenix
by Stephen Lendman

06/14/10

On April 16, journalist John Cole wrote: ‘The message is clear — you torture people and then destroy the evidence, and you get off without so much as a sternly worded letter. If you are a whistle blower outlining criminal behavior by the government, you get prosecuted.’ In fact, it’s worse. Under Bush, torture was official policy. It remains so under Obama who absolved CIA torturers, despite unequivocal evidence of their guilt. But leaking it risks criminal prosecution for revealing state secrets and endangering national security...

You really want government drilling for oil?

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

You’ve got to hand it to the people who really dislike free markets. They see them everywhere (under every bed?) and especially wherever any serious problem arises. That no free market exists within a thousand miles makes no difference whatsoever. Take the oil spill in the Gulf. Market opponents are having a field day. They say this finally demonstrates the need for government to run things. Private firms can’t be trusted...

Hold polluters accountable

Boston Globe
by staff

06/13/10

It was justice delayed and mostly denied. In 1984, a toxic gas leak in Bhopal, India, killed 15,000 people and sickened thousands more. This month, eight former executives of Union Carbide’s Indian subsidiary were convicted on negligence charges. But only seven of them are still alive, and their sentences — two years in prison each, and fines of $2,100 — were far lighter than victims’ families and activists had hoped. The light sentence, which only came after a quarter-century of courtroom struggles, serves as a reminder that many of the world’s justice systems are still not adept at properly addressing huge, preventable disasters. So it’s reassuring that, in a recent trip to the Gulf Coast, Attorney General Eric Holder stressed that the US government is looking at all possible avenues, both civil and criminal, to hold BP responsible for the ongoing oil spill disaster...

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil gusher demonstrates the necessity of building civil society within American communities. In fact if anything it demonstrates how community agency, the capacity to act for collective purposes, has been eroded due to a persistent effort to erode civil society and create dependency upon state and corporate actors. This is done through a number of mechanisms: (1) subsuming mutual aid and not-for-profit actors into government welfare; (2) slowly chipping away at the capacity of welfare and social service agencies through diminished funding, increased bureaucracy, and enhanced regulation that undermines the core mission of the agency and; (3) finally by transferring such services over to corporate actors who seek to maximize profit by distributing material (not social) goods that fail to offer a semblance of empowerment nor promises to build individual capacity for transformative change...

The ethanol trap

by Robert Bryce

06/10/10

The most disgusting aspect of the blowout in the Gulf of Mexico isn’t the video images of oil-soaked birds or the incessant blather from pundits about what BP or the Obama administration should be doing to stem the flow of oil. Instead, it’s the ugly spectacle of the corn-ethanol scammers doing all they can to capitalize on the disaster so that they can justify an expansion of the longest-running robbery of taxpayers in U.S. history. … The blowout of BP’s Macondo well has given the corn-ethanol industry yet another opportunity to push its fuel adulterant on the American consumer. And unfortunately, the Obama administration appears ready and willing to foist yet more of the corrosive, environmentally destructive, low-heat-energy fuel on motorists...

Fierce Urgency

James Howard Kunstler, Truthout: "The exquisite morbidity of the BP oil spill has concentrated the collective national mind like few other events in this ongoing long emergency. How many times a day does it occur to you - perhaps while sitting in traffic, or oogling some girl in a nearby cubicle, or cruising the freezer stacks in the supermarket - that one mile deep in the Gulf of Mexico that crude is just blasting away into the deep blue sea? Anyway, it troubles my hours. But what if it hadn't happened? Bring on the Coalition of the Digging

Slate
by Christopher Hitchens

06/21/10

The story of countries that are poor because they are rich is an old one: The Congo has been a scandalous example since the time of its private ownership by the Belgian royal family in the 19th century, and to the list of nations subject to depredation by resource exploitation one could also add Haiti, Angola, India, and (to be fair) China. Afghanistan has no infrastructure or professional civil service, no tradition of extractive industry, and no mechanism for sharing resources among its wildly discrepant provinces and regions. A Klondike beyond the Khyber could be the last thing it needs. Still. This is at least a trillion-dollar national-resource treasure in a country that so far has had a GDP with scarcely any pulse. The governments of NATO — which include countries with vast experience in mining, from Germany to Canada and from Britain to the United States — have had almost no real work to do on the economic front except to distribute aid, itself often a cause of resentment, and waste time trying to “interdict” Afghanistan’s only other existing resource, which is opium. Is it conceivable that such an alliance of earth-moving and digging powers could not at last find something genuinely constructive to do in a country where they already have a U.N. mandate for rebuilding and reconstruction?

The Supreme Court Says NO to the People - Again

Michael Winship, Truthout: "At a dinner party, an ever-so-proper aristocrat who had been at the British evacuation of Dunkirk 60 years ago, remained tightlipped despite intense questioning from the other guests about what he had seen there. The 6-3 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project, No. 08-1498 effectively creates a new class of people: Unpersons. These are people who have the temerity to disagree with U.S. government’s designations of certain persons and groups as terrorists. The ruling effectively makes it a crime to attempt to make peace with such people. It eliminates, from a legal perspective, the basic human rights of anyone who disagrees with the U.S. government...

In dem Artikel "Will BP disaster spark move to a new Gulf economy?" von Chris Komm am 25.

Taking Bush’s preventive war doctrine underground (sort of)

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

Remember when Democrats and independents craved a less belligerent U.S. foreign policy that eschewed the aggressive preventive war doctrine of the George W. Bush administration? When Barack Obama took office, the atmospherics did seem to change as the new president promised to withdraw forces from Iraq and actually talk to unfriendly nations, such as Iran and North Korea. The only problem is that the new boss is largely the same as the old boss in the war on terror. To give some credit where it is due, the recently released Obama National Security Strategy has laudably narrowed the broad war to attacking al-Qaeda and associated groups around the world. But Obama has also made that war more aggressive and more secretive (sort of)...

Ample laws could have prevented the speculative collapse if they had been enforced, including requiring banks to use sound underwriting standards, preventing credit rating agencies from bestowing triple-A ratings on junk, or keeping derivatives in check. But John Boehner is actually pushing it. … [The] House Minority Leader [says] taxpayers should help pick up the tab. ‘I think the people responsible in the oil spill — BP and the federal government — should take full responsibility for what’s happening there,’ Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning. … One very clever thing about this is the fact that they are framing this spill as being the equal fault of BP and the Federal government, which means it’s all the fault of an oil company and the Democrats...

Less government spending = less economic trouble

Christian Science Monitor
by Robert Higgs

06/23/10

Though our current economic troubles are complex, many mainstream economists have endorsed the simplistic Keynesian theory that massive government spending will produce jobs and prosperity. From such Keynesian thinking have flowed the ’stimulus’ and bailout measures that have increased the size and power of government and added trillions of dollars to the public debt. The federal deficit has jumped from about 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in fiscal 2008 to about 10 percent of GDP in fiscal 2009 and 2010. The government now forecasts deficits in the neighborhood of $1 trillion per year for the next decade. Politicians, who are always looking for plausible rationales for their insatiable spending, borrowing, and power-grabbing, had never abandoned Keynesianism, so they have been elated to find economic ‘experts’ again confirming their self-interested inclinations. Indeed, several prominent economists, such as New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, are urging Washington to spend even more, lest the economy slow. But what does history show?

Our Fault, Too

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "There were hearings on Capitol Hill this week regarding the Gulf oil disaster, and virtually everyone involved - from witnesses to experts to government officials - had a grand old time throwing rocks at British Petroleum. The Obama administration and various government agencies have also been taking it in the teeth over their failure to quell the oil boiling up from the bottom of the sea. Beaches are closing, animals are dying, livelihoods are being destroyed, and unbelievable as it may seem, the worst is yet to come. New reports indicate the well may have been releasing oil equivalent to the Exxon Valdez spill every eight to ten days since this whole thing started."

Obama, BP and the Wimp Factor

Alexander Cockburn, Truthout: "The British are howling with rage at President Obama's recent tough language about BP's chief executive Tony Hayward. Earlier this week, Obama suggested he'd fire Hayward if he could. U.S. politicians have taken to calling BP 'British Petroleum' - a name the company has not used since the 1990s. It's not surprising that the British are upset. BP is the elephant in the national living room. The value of the BP dividend accounts for roughly 1 pound in every seven of annual British shareholder payouts, and here are prominent politicians in the U.S. talking about BP suspending dividend payouts."

The Case for a Second Round of Stimulus

By Mike Whitney

Consumer spending is flat, home prices are set to fall, unemployment will likely edge higher, private sector credit is still contracting, capacity utilization is far below pre-crisis levels, the CPI is slipping, and yields on US Treasuries are priced for deflation. The government must pick up the slack or their will be a general fall in prices that will trigger more layoffs, larger deficits, and social unrest.

The war is making you poor

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

06/11/10

During the Bush years, war funding was ‘off budget’ – a bit of fiscal trickery that masks the real costs of these conflicts – and the Obama crowd promised to put an end to that practice. However, so far the Obama-ites are going the Bush route of submitting ‘emergency’ supplementals to our misnamed ‘defense’ budget in order to cover the costs of the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. This time around the ‘emergency’ funding comes to $159 billion: H.R. 5353 would eliminate that entirely and make our solons fund their war out of the remaining $549 billion earmarked for the Department of Defense. Simple, clean, and clearly illustrating how our elected representatives fool us — and themselves — into believing the costs of their wars are less than they really are, the four-page bill already has bipartisan support...

Oversight Panel: Feds Jumped Too Soon to Bail Out AIG

Chris Adams, McClatchy Newspapers: "The federal government didn't exhaust all its options before it committed tens of billions of taxpayers' dollars to bail out the American International Group during the height of the 2008 financial collapse, according to a new report from a congressional watchdog panel. The Congressional Oversight Panel, which was created to monitor the spending in the 2008 bank bailout bill known as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, detailed in its latest monthly report the government's extraordinary rescue of AIG and its lingering effects on taxpayers and the financial markets."

Does Obama Really Know or Care About Who Is at Guantanamo?

Andy Worthington, Truthout: "The recently released Final Report of President Obama's Guantanamo Review Task Force was supposed to provide a cogent and definitive analysis of the status of the remaining 181 prisoners, given that it took 11 months to complete.... Sadly, however, the end result - although valid in many ways - also revealed institutional caution, credulity regarding the contributions of the intelligence services, an inability to address fundamental problems with the legislation that authorized President Bush's detention policies in the first place and a willingness to bend to the demands of political expediency."

Guantanamo Won't Close, but Illinois Supermax Will Open

Jean Casella and James Ridgeway, Solitary Watch: "Obama's oath to close the military detention camp at Guantanamo Bay within a year of his election was more than a campaign promise or a post-inauguration executive order; for many people, it signified a return to some semblance of the rule of law after eight years of a rogue administration. In January 2010, the White House announced that it would miss its original deadline for closing Guantanamo."

Khadr Trial Will Be a Window Into America's War on Terror

Carol Rosenberg, McClatchy Newspapers: "Across his eight years in US custody, Americans have seen Canadian Omar Khadr grow from a child found near dead in a war zone in Afghanistan to a brooding, weeping teenager and more recently a defiant young man spurning a guilty plea deal at Guantanamo. Prosecutors say Khadr, now 23, was an 'unprivileged enemy belligerent' when he joined elders on a night mission in Afghanistan, planting mines. They call it a war crime. Defense lawyers see a 'child soldier' whose father introduced him to al Qaida at age 11 and deserved the protections of an innocent offered up to war. While his coming trial must tackle those competing tales, the first full war crimes prosecution of the Obama administration may reveal much more."

The federal government would have “absolute power” to shut down the Internet under the terms of a new US Senate bill being pushed by Joe Lieberman, legislation which would hand President Obama a figurative “kill switch” to seize control of the world wide web in response to a Homeland Security directive.

The Transportation Security Administration will block all websites that contain "controversial opinion" from its federal computers in the latest example of how Internet censorship is expanding in both the private and public sector as the federal government prepares to push through a power grab that will empower President Obama to shut down the world wide web with an emergency decree.

The Lights Are Going Out For Free Speech On The Internet

Global move to mimic the Chinese model of web censorship and regulation is coming to America

Type the keywords “Internet censorship” into Google News and you will immediately understand to what degree the world wide web is under assault from attempts by governments globally to regulate and stifle free speech. From Australia to Belarus, from Turkey to Vietnam, from Pakistan to Egypt, from Afghanistan to Iran, huge chunks of the Internet are going dark as the Chinese model of Internet regulation is adopted worldwide.

Who else but Joe Lieberman would introduce a bill to give the President the power to shut down the Internet with the flick of a switch? I’m afraid of the answer to that question, and you should be, too. However, it’s hardly surprising America’s premier authoritarian warmonger — author of a bill that would strip American citizenship from anyone even vaguely suspected of ‘terrorism’ — would come up with a scheme like this. … This bill is the culmination of years of yelping about the likelihood of a ‘cyber-9/11,’ a devastating attack on the national infrastructure via the Internet. If such an event is so likely, then why hasn’t it happened already? Because the likelihood of it ever happening is nearly nil...

Nearly a decade after the September 11 attacks, we still have not settled the question of how to deal with terrorism suspects. Should they be in military or civilian custody? Should they receive trials, and if so what kind? After years of acrimonious debate, President Obama is offering a way to settle this argument once and for all: Why not just kill them? Last week U.N. investigator Philip Alston delivered a report on ‘targeted killings’ in which the U.S. government plays a starring role. Under a policy secretly initiated by George W. Bush and expanded by Obama, the CIA and the Joint Special Operations Command track and kill people, including U.S. citizens, based on their alleged ties to Al Qaeda or its allies. The killings, typically carried out by missiles fired from drone aircraft, dangerously blur the line between warfare and summary execution...

Hint: sanctions ain’t it. You’ll hear a lot from the Iran-bashing, neoconservative crowd and from the Obama administration itself, especially the State Department, about what a great victory this is. In particular, you’ll hear Obama and the State Department tout the fact that it was Obama’s brilliant effort to win over Russia and China for the sanctions vote that made all the difference. They’ll tell you that Obama contrived to isolate Iran and to persuade Moscow and Beijing to go along with the new sanctions on Iran, when in fact Russia and China succeeded in ensuring that the sanctions imposed by the UNSC are meaningless...

T.J. Buonomo, Truthout: "Since 2003, more than 4,300 American troops and perhaps hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have become casualties of a war full of contradictions. BP bets the planet, we lose

In These Times
by Terry J. Allen

06/10/10

As the oil spreads, choking life and livelihood, the hearings and investigations into BP’s gulf hemorrhage are focused on human failures, technical flaws and short-term fixes. These silos of inquiry, while essential, sidestep the deeper problem: Deep sea drilling is inherently risky, and continued use of fossil fuels means increasing reliance on tenuous technologies and dangerous energy sources. One factor ramping up the risk lies in frigid sediments that have rested for eons 1,000 feet or more below sea and tundra. At that depth, hydrate gas (usually methane) is a stable solid, compressed into molecular cages of ice. But if destabilized by a drop in pressure or a rise in temperature, the gas-water compound can quickly expand 164 times in volume. If ignited, even ice-bound hydrates burn...

Ziviler Ungehorsam und Sozialproteste sind jetzt Bürgerpflicht! Pressemitteilung zu den Sparbeschlüssen der Bundesregierung.

Aktion gegen führende Finanzinstitution in Frankfurt beschlossen.

Protestieren, demonstrieren, streiken - Sparpaket stoppen
