The story, you see, is no longer about WikiLeaks, the Afghan logs, war crimes committed by the US under cover of darkness, or the US government’s frantic efforts to cover them up — it’s now about Assange’s sexual habits, and Manning’s, too. So why am I so certain this is what Assange says it is: a coordinated effort by Washington to smear and discredit him? Because it’s all so very American, i.e. sex-obsessed. In what other country would their spooks exhibit such an unhealthy interest in the erotic routines of their quarry? The combination of voyeurism and puritanism is a national characteristic: this smear campaign has ‘Made in America’ stamped all over it...

Who will stand up to the GOP’s war on Islam?

Salon
by Gene Lyons

08/19/10

Even granting that more people are nuts on the subject of religion than all other topics combined, this entire ginned-up controversy about the planned construction of an Islamic cultural center in the vicinity of ground zero in Lower Manhattan illustrates the Founding Fathers’ wisdom like no other. No establishing, no prohibiting, period. Also, alas, it highlights the sheer cynicism of the GOP politicians pressing it as an election-year ‘wedge’ issue. Regardless of how hard they try to disguise it, if only from themselves, those who would forbid the project express an essentially tribal view of Americanism specifically repudiated by the U.S. Constitution...

The Transformation of Latin America is a Global Advance

Nearly two centuries after it won nominal independence and Washington declared it a backyard, Latin America is standing up. The tide of progressive change that has swept the continent for the past decade has brought to power a string of social democratic and radical socialist governments that have attacked social and racial privilege, rejected neoliberal orthodoxy and challenged imperial domination of the region.

The Fed can’t solve our economic woes

Cato Institute
by Gerald P. O'Driscoll, Jr.

08/16/10

Temporary spending and tax breaks are always dubious, and especially so now when the rational motivation is to save more and consume less. One-off tax credits for homes, for example, merely borrowed sales from the future. These fiscal programs predictably depressed rather than augmented future consumption. What is in short supply is not liquidity, but savings. The Fed can supply the former but not the latter. Both fiscal and monetary polices need to shift their focus. The Fed has done the heavy lifting and responded more than adequately to liquidity issues. Now there is little further it can do that is beneficial...

Deutsche Wirtschaft boomt dank Leiharbeit

It’s the beginning of the end for the American empire

AlterNet
by Chalmers Johnson

08/18/10

Let me begin by asking: What harm would befall the United States if we actually decided, against all odds, to close those hundreds and hundreds of bases, large and small, that we garrison around the world? What if we actually dismantled our empire, and came home? Would Genghis Khan-like hordes descend on us? Not likely. Neither a land nor a sea invasion of the U.S. is even conceivable. Would 9/11-type attacks accelerate? It seems far likelier to me that, as our overseas profile shrank, the possibility of such attacks would shrink with it...

The bottom line is that you will lose your health care under this legislation, if not your job, your country as they bankrupt America, and maybe ultimately your life or the life of a loved one. All that to make dreamy, emotionalized, liberals happy, even though many of them are not happy because the socialism in the bill is not overt enough. Moreover, the promises made to the American people to pass the bill are shown in the study to be thoroughly false...

Would resistance be aggression?

The ugly truth

Let’s get something straight: to be an enemy of American occupation, bombing, and ‘nation building’ is not the same thing as being an enemy of America or its people. Regulatory Agencies' Attempts to Sweep Oil Under the Rug Raise Questions

Wenonah Hauter, Food & Water Watch: "'A recent report by the Deepwater Horizon Incident Joint Information Center (a collaboration between the federal government and BP) claiming that only 25 percent of spilled oil remains in the Gulf has been refuted by researchers with the Georgia Sea Grant and University of Georgia, who released a report yesterday concluding that in fact nearly 80 percent of the oil remains in the Gulf. The report confirms the fact that the federal government should have taken a more cautious and responsible approach to testing marine life before opening the Gulf for fishing.'"

Gulf Oil Spill Plume Stretches 21 Miles, Not Breaking Down Much

Pete Spotts, The Christian Science Monitor: "A plume of oil some 700 feet thick and at least 21 miles long has been detected deep beneath the Gulf of Mexico. It originated at the Deepwater Horizon blowout and consists of hydrocarbons from the well, according to measurements released Thursday. The survey, conducted by US and Australian scientists during a 10-day research cruise in late June, represents the most detailed picture yet of undersea plumes of oil and methane from the Gulf oil spill. The researchers were surprised by the plume's relative stability as well as by an apparent lack of activity on the part of microbes to break down the oil."

Deficits, debt, and self-deception

Acton Institute
by Samuel Gregg

08/18/10

Increasing numbers of people below the age of 30 are aware that their long-term financial security has been undermined by the excessive personal, corporate, and government debt incurred by previous generations. It’s much harder to honor your father and mother when you think they’ve recklessly squandered your financial future. A second cultural consequence of excessive debt is an erosion of trust. Just as wealth-creation and sound credit arrangements are ultimately built upon substantial reserves of trust, so too does a widespread inability to repay debts corrode a society’s reservoirs of trust and subsequent wealth-creation capacities. But perhaps most worryingly, societies that embrace excessive indebtedness as a way of life eventually begin to deceive themselves...

Barely a day goes by when we are not told that life was better in some distant, pastoral, pre-modern era, when men hunted for meat, women cooked it, and they spent the rest of their time banging drums and dancing around fires. We’re forever being informed that as a direct consequence of our creation of a comfortable, convenient society, the world will come to an end...

Projected US budget deficits threaten to curtail growth

Agence France-Presse

08/19/10

The US budget deficit is expected to shrink this year but projected shortfalls over the next decade may jump by six trillion dollars and curtail growth, estimates by Congress showed Thursday. The Congressional Budget Office estimated a federal budget deficit of 1.342 trillion dollars for fiscal 2010 that ends September 30 — 71 billion dollars below last year’s total of 1.413 trillion dollars...

A politician’s promise

Center for a Stateless Society
by Darian Worden

08/19/10

‘Mission accomplished’ is a frequent rallying cry of governments trying to keep up appearances of success. If the economy was in better shape now, recovery would be credited to the wisdom of our glorious leaders. But we’re supposed to believe that the benefits just haven’t reached us yet and without the bold measures of politicians, things could only be worse (but of course!). No matter the outcome, politicians will take credit for the good, and pass the bad onto rivals while claiming that they did not have enough control over your life to do what was necessary...

National Review

In 2008, Americans worked 197 days, until July 16 — in other words, more than half the year — to pay for the total cost of government. As a result of the bailouts, stimulus, and increased discretionary spending in the federal budget and new taxes for health care, Americans this year have worked until August 19, fully 231 days. In two years, the American people have lost over a month of wages to the higher cost of government...

High profits, high unemployment: What gives?

Nolan Chart
by Gene DeNardo

08/19/10

Perplexing statistics have been surfacing concerning the economy. While corporate profits are returning to pre ‘crisis’ levels, unemployment seems to remain stuck around ten percent. Worsening the scenario is the fact that this doesn’t capture the entire employment picture, as some believe at least another ten percent have given up on finding a job or have been forced into early retirement. Companies have been moving to more efficient production which translates to less labor. But, less labor per unit of output hasn’t always translated to higher unemployment. Big corporate has been dumping huge sums of capital into more efficient production for decades. Why the high unemployment condition?

Economic ignorance on deficits

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

08/23/10

For one thing, contrary to the Times’ fear-mongering, the so-called trade deficit doesn’t really signify anything bad. In fact, if the government stopped keeping track of these trade statistics, nobody would care and nothing bad would happen. There would be no gigantic sucking sound. America wouldn’t be sucked dry of money or wealth. Americans would not suddenly find themselves living in a land of poverty...

Debt Virus Spreads During Make-Believe Recovery

China Slashes U.S. Government Bond Holdings By The Largest Amount Ever

The nation's holdings of long-term Treasuries fell in June for the first time in 15 months, dropping by $21.2 billion to $839.7 billion, a U.S. government report showed yesterday. Two- year yields headed for a fifth monthly decline in August, falling today to a record 0.48 percent.

Policy makers have long worried that Americans aren't saving enough for old age. The Tillman Story: Just Gimme Some Truth

Rory O'Connor, Rory O'Connor's Blog: "Of the many lies George W. Bush told us about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, some were larger but none worse than that told about the death of Pat Tillman. In 2004 - just after Bush's invasion of Iraq, ostensibly in search of those non-existent weapons of mass destruction - Tillman became a military-and media-manufactured symbol of duty, sacrifice, patriotism and heroism. But the truth about Tillman's life is much more complex, and his death ultimately far more heroic, than the convenient, self-serving lie served up by the military and then sent out by our ever-gullible media."

The Guns of August: Lowering the Flag on the American Century

She was, of course, looking back at events that had occurred almost 50 years earlier and had at her disposal documents and information not available to participants. They were acting, as Vietnam-era Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara put it, in the fog of war. So where are we this August of 2010, with guns blazing in one war in Afghanistan even as we try to extricate ourselves from another in Iraq?"

Arbeitslosigkeit macht krank

Siehe dazu: arbeitsmarkt aktuell: Gesundheitsrisiko Arbeitslosigkeit

Why the US empire will never conquer Afghanistan

Consider what happened to a man named Sayid Arif, who was apparently working for the Afghan government. They yanked him from his car and just shot him, leaving him with a note on his chest that said, ‘This is punishment’ for anyone working for the government. Or consider what happened to Khairullah, a young man kidnapped by the Taliban...

Victory in Iraq: Last of the Combat Troops Leaving Iraq?

Gates: Iraq occupation could go on, if we're asked to stay

Robert Gates told reporters on Wednesday that by the end of the month, approximately 50,000 U.S. soldiers will remain in Iraq. Those forces, he said, would be fully withdrawn by the end of 2011. Unless, that is, they're asked to stay.

Victory in Iraq

By Thomas DiLorenzo

King Obama has announced that he is pulling all combat troops out of Iraq, but 50,000 will remain there. Of course, all troops are trained for combat; calling them "non-combat support personnel" is simply B.S.

Interview with Katie Couric

"Well, first of all we are not leaving," Gen. Petraeus replied. "There are 50,000 U.S. troops that are remaining in Iraq albeit in a support role rather than a leading combat role. But that's an enormous capability."

Recent reports have been touting the end of combat operations in Iraq, saying the last of the combat troops have left, but the reports are angering some of the tens of thousands of troops who are still there and will remain there.

Not the End: What about the 50,000 troops who are staying behind?

They didn't exactly send their M-16s and sidearms out with that Stryker brigade. And they're not going to transform themselves into the Peace Corps overnight. In truth, the last combat unit leaving Iraq is really a nonevent.

All lies, all the time

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

I had to laugh when I saw the headline on Antiwar.com: ‘US Announces Second Fake End to Iraq War.’ Yes, I did indeed get a rush of deja-vu as I listened to Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow solemnly describe ‘the end’ of the ‘combat mission’ in Iraq, and Richard Engel pontificate as the cameras zoomed in on the ‘last’ convoy over the border to Kuwait. Occasionally, however, reality would intrude, as Rachel noted the broadcast could be interrupted at any time by a sudden attack, and there would be no time to explain to viewers what was happening. It was Olbermann who openly referred to Bush’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ moment, and wondered if perhaps this wasn’t a re-run: I’ll bet he got in plenty of trouble for that little crack...

Mogelpackung "Bildungsgutschein"

Die Neugestaltung der ALG II-Regelsätze für Kinder durch Bildungsgutscheine und eine Chipkarten. Artikel von Twister (Bettina Winsemann) in telepolis vom 17.08.2010

http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/33/33143/1.html
[ http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/33/33144/1.html ]

What are SNAP/food stamps?

Putting government first

Human Events
by Patrick J. Buchanan

08/13/10

A nation whose national debt is approaching the size of its gross national product, that goes abroad to borrow money to keep non-essential workers on government payroll is a nation on the way down and out. And anyone who thinks this Obama party is ever going to cull the armies of tens of millions of government workers or scores of millions of government beneficiaries to put America’s house in order is deluding himself...

Why the rich and powerful prefer tyranny

A simple view

Liberty For All
by Kevin Tuma

08/14/10

The business tycoon has lots of spare time to socialize in powerful circles, because this is the business of the tycoon — who already has money and is struggling not to make himself rich, but to stay rich. Such a person will naturally support big government, because big government is a wellspring of resources — a teat, in other words, from which the tycoon potentially derives nourishment...

You don’t own other people

Center for a Stateless Society
by Kevin Carson

08/13/10

A sizable share of people in the criminal justice system is made up of those who ran afoul of some law commanding ‘Touch not, taste not, handle not.’ If you support such laws, there is no ground on which you can consistently do so without believing that other people are your property, or are your inferiors and subject to your command. You may argue that ’society’ collectively decides what to permit and not to permit, based on some vision of the ‘common good.’ But remember those high school civics texts with the stuff about government exercising only powers delegated by the governed, government’s function being to protect the rights of the individual, and all that? Well, you can’t delegate a power you don’t have. And government can’t protect a right, on your behalf, that you don’t possess as an individual...

Victimless crime laws: Creating, not preventing, chaos

Libertarian News Examiner
by Garry Reed

08/14/10

When a group of powerful people arrogate to themselves the ‘right’ to create any Law they wish and force it onto others, they become the aggressors and those peaceful ‘others’ become their victims. The Law allows the Lawmakers to do anything they wish. The Law allows white men to own black slaves. The Law allows men to stone women to death because they were raped. The Law allows thugs to commit genocide against Jews. The Law allows gangsters to organize into vast criminal enterprises they call ‘Government’ and commit every sort of unconscionable cruelty imaginable...

Housing Crisis a Symptom of Capitalism's Failure

Rick Wolff, Truthout: "This capitalist crisis resembles a certain kind of serious disease. Different symptoms keep flaring up at different locations. It began with subprime mortgages in residential housing. Then, sequential flare-ups hit the private banking system, forced millions out of their jobs and homes, drastically cut world trade, and undermined the public services and national debts of several European countries. Meanwhile, another symptom festered in the credit freeze crippling so much private borrowing. Now, yet another symptom matures, as government subsidies and supports to our crisis-ridden private housing industry add rising billions to the deficit."

Why no rush to aid Pakistan? Russia, Pakistan Show Need for Climate Action

The images are devastating, as are the numbers. The floods in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, by now reaching as far south as the Punjab, have affected more people than all major natural disasters in the past six years combined. Some 14 million people - 2 million displaced - and 300,000 homes have been hit, with 1,600 fatalities so far.

Global Warming and the Pakistani Flood

It's impossible to look at the images coming out of Pakistan and not shake your head at the brutality of Mother Nature. But is it Mother Nature's fault-or our own?

Errant climate may be sign of breakdown, scientists say

Floods, fires, melting ice, and feverish heat - from smoke-choked Moscow to water-soaked Iowa and the High Arctic, the planet seems to be having a midsummer breakdown. It is not just a portent of things to come, scientists say, but a sign of troubling climate change already under way.

'Blocked' jetstream to blame for freak weather in Russia and Pakistan, say scientists

A massive heatwave in Russia and the current devastating floods in Pakistan could be linked by the unusual behaviour of the jetstream, scientists believe.

Biggest relocation in China since Three Gorges

China's growing thirst for water is driving one of the world's biggest mass relocations, with 440,000 people leaving their homes to make way for a huge man-made canal project to channel water to drought-prone Beijing.

America's Biggest Jobs Program Is the US Military

Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog: "America's biggest - and only major - jobs program is the U.S. military. Over 1,400,000 Americans are now on active duty; another 833,000 are in the reserves, many full time. Another 1,600,000 Americans work in companies that supply the military with everything from weapons to utensils.... If we didn't have this giant military jobs program, the U.S. unemployment rate would be over 11.5 percent today instead of 9.5 percent."

Dora Calott Wang, M.D., Truthout: "Is your health insurance company traded on Wall Street? If so, is Wall Street deciding your medical care? It's hard to recall that for-profit corporations were once kept out of health care - in fact, for most of the 20th century. During this time, the nation's medical system was built largely by non-profit and charitable organizations, which is why so many hospitals are named for saints."

Federal Reserve: Can you protect your endangered dollars?
